Tom King and Patrick Lawson achieve Grey Wolf

posted ‎‎Aug 30, 2009 2:09 PM‎‎ by Alan Brake

On Saturday, Tom & Patrick finished the last item for their gold boomerang and grey wolf award.

The Grey Wolf is the highest badge in cubs and requires persistence and determination. Well done cubs!

Owl safe and well

posted ‎‎Aug 30, 2009 2:09 PM‎‎ by Alan Brake

For those who were a little early last week for our space night, the owl that Akela rescued from the road is safe and well. We wrapped it in a towel and Jane Bester took it to the vet. The bird carer rang the next day to say that the owl was fine, and would be released back into the wild. It appears it was hit by a car, but not badly injured.

We had a great time looking at the stars and satellites. Objects that we saw were the moon, jupiter and three of the moons, omega centauri, the jewel box, and alpha centauri.

Thanks to Peter and Luke for letting us use your telescopes.

Lots of Boomerangs..

Tonight we presented bronze boomerangs to Lucas, Becky & Jacob, and had a catch up night for silver boomerangs and presented Silver to Jo, Cara, Lucas and Sam. Well done everyone.

Science night experimental fun

posted ‎‎Aug 4, 2009 5:03 AM‎‎ by Alan Brake   [ updated ‎‎Aug 4, 2009 5:08 AM‎‎ ]

<Photos attached> Tonight we had science - thanks to Bagheera for organising, and Alan Neylan for standing in at the last moment when we were short a parent roster. We made grass heads, experimented with sound, matched rocks to household objects, exploded a volcano, and made slime. Four new joeys started - welcome. A picture paints a thousand words.

Landcare project success

posted ‎‎Aug 4, 2009 4:58 AM‎‎ by Alan Brake

Last Sunday we finished our landcare project with 6 cubs, 1 scout, 2 venturers, 6 parents and one sibling helping the small band of SOWN volunteers. We planted over 100 plants, mainly lomandra, but also some wattle (for wattle day) and sandpaper figs. Thanks to Dick Harding and our councillor Geraldine Knapp for their fantastic and obliging support to help our cubs help the environment, and hopefully learn to love and care for the environment. 12 cubs successfully completed the landcare badge over the 6 months. The cubs also had great fun playing in the creek.
