Vampire Diaries-The Struggle by L.J. Smith The story continues where the Awakening left off(see below). Stefan's brother Damon tries to get Elena's attention and love just by being the bad boy. As Elena struggles to retain her popularity, everyone around her seems to be avoiding her. A turn of events seem to elevate the town's concern about Stefan. A new teacher seems to also bring suspicion, especially when he requires the students to come to his house to have a party. See the story unfold in the second book of Vampire Diaries. It is a great book, I thought it was a great second book to the series, there was never a dull moment reading it. I couldn't put it down! ~Mckelle H. -TAB Vampire Diaries-The Awakening by L.J. Her parents have recently died and her Aunt Judith has recently come to live with her and her little sister Maragaret. Elena is the most popular girl in school, she is the girl every girl wants to be like and the boy everyone wants to go out with. Stefan Salvatore recently started School at Robert E. Lee, as soon as Elena sees him, she must have him. However, he seems to have no interest in her, or does he? As she battles for his attention, everything seems to be against her.

Then Todd and his loyal dog stumble upon something strange and dangerous . . . .silence. The silence comes from a girl! This news causes chaos and Todd is forced to run for his life with this girl. There are truths that Todd has always known that are turning out to be lies and lies that are turning out to be terrifying truths. This is the first book in a new sci/fi series that promises to keep you on the edge of your seat. This book doesn’t let you go!
There are frequent implied usages of the ‘f’ but it is only truly used a few times. The violence is pretty graphic but not frequent. I would reserve this title for the High School crowd. ~Allison Madsen-Teen Librarian
“In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth.”(exerpt from paperback) The Unconsecrated are zombies that eternally hunger for human blood and flesh. They live in the Forest of Hands and Teeth. If you are bitten, you become infected. . . . you die. . . and you return as unconsecrated. Mary’s father has turned. . .and because Mary was not there to keep her from the fence, so has her mother. Many other things in Mary’s life are falling apart when the village fence is breached by the unconsecrated. In this thrilling horror story, Ryan takes the reader through one terrifying event after another until you are left breathless. The violence is not for the faint of heart or younger readers.

Suzanne Collins is back with her second book in the Hunger Games Trilogy. Katniss returns to District 12 where she lives in the Victor's Village with Haymitch and Peta. Katniss soon learns how her actions in the arena have affected people in all districts as she and Peeta tour the districts. A wicked twist is thrown into her life, because of the Quell Games, that no one could possibly have predicted. I believe this book is excellently written. It is heartpounding and addicting, I couldn't put the book down. I think Hunger Games is better, but this book is still unbelievable and I can't wait until the third book comes out! ~Mckelle H. -TAB
Jack Danielson has been told to lie low all his life, even tho he is an amazing athlete. "Sport, why don't you let Dave win the sprint? Y'know it would make his dad proud..." "Come on Jack, let Bass score the winning touchdown, no need to show off..." He thought he was being kind, but really, his parents didn't want him drawing any attention to himself...
Firestorm is a good, modern-fantasy book with telepathy, alien technology, and a message straight from Greenpeace. Yes, the book has hints of 'save the ocean' going on, but its a good thing. It really helps you believe the story, and it makes you stop and think. It's nothing brilliantly new, but a refreshing view point.
I found Firestorm quite enjoyable, and can't wait to get my hands on Whirlwind, the sequel.

In Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins thrusts readers into a world filled with fear, violence, sensationalism, and selfishness. Ironically however, the world of the Hunger Games also embraces friendship, love, and self sacrifice. In a future world North America has been reduced to a Capitol and 12 districts. Once a year the Capitol host the Hunger Games in which 24 adolescents, a boy and girl from each district, compete in a battle to the death while Panam looks on via live video broadcasts. This is Reality TV at its deadliest and most violent. Collins tells the story through a 16 year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen who lives in the twelfth district of Panam. Once the Hunger Games begin the reader will be unable to tear themselves away. Readers will wait with bated breath for the next installment of Katniss’ story, Catching Fire. (Catching Fire is now available to reserve via a hold.)
This novel is filled with violence, panic, terror, and takes the reader on a ride for their life as they see themselves in Katniss’ positions. Due to the violence and frequent killings that are part of the Hunger Games, this book should be recommended to older readers and will not be for everyone. The audio production of the novel is excellent and highly recommended.
This title has also been nominated for the Utah Beehive Book Award 2010. . .if you have read it or do read it come into a library near you and fill out a ballot. Let's see if we can help it win! ~Allison Madsen-Teen Librarian

In his fourth ‘weenie’ book, Lubar has again come up with bizarre, humorous, and sometimes scary & disturbing short stories for teens. A girl need a date for the school dance, so her father creates one named ‘Stitchy.’ A carnival ride brings to mind a whole other reason for screams and much more! You may want to read this one with the lights on. A sure laugh-out- loud thrilling read! ~Allison Madsen-Teen Librarian Laurie Halse Anderson is known for her novels that address times of crisis in teens’ lives. Her novel Speak is renowned. In her newest novel, Anderson addresses the crisis of eating disorders. Lia and her once best friend Cassie make a pact to get skinny. Cassie—bulimia . . . Lia—anorexia. The novel is told in first person so that the reader experiences what it is like to exist in the mind of someone suffering from anorexia nervosa. Cassie dies at the beginning of the novel and although Lia has been to rehab before, Cassie’s death triggers her to start giving in to her eating disorder. This book is tough to read, but may help teens to understand why these disorders are so dangerous and often deadly.

This is a good summer read. The text is very easy to read and understand. Goddess Games is a story about three very different girls living and working at King's Crown in Juniper, Colorado. Each girl is secretly struggling with something that she can't tell anybody. The book does have some swearing in it, however, it is overall a great book. Check it out! (when I check my copy in! :D)

~Allison-Teen Librarian In three entirely different stories, Yang has presented another masterpiece that will cause readers to pause and think. The first tale is of a young boy who is battling demons on the inside. The story shows his struggles through dreams. The second tale is of a character absorbed by the need to obtain wealth. It is odd and yet poignant. The third tale is of a young woman disappointed by her life and its outlook. All three stories center on the need to look outside of oneself and see the bigger picture. These stories are a quick read and will make you think. . . . .I think?. ~Allison-Teen Librarian

Guilt. It is something that we all accept and take freely from others and situations. Guilt can be detrimental to many of us. For Amy it is all she can think about. While in the car with her best friend they swerve off the road and end up in a fatal accident, only amy survives. To compound the situation, Amy is an alcoholic. When we first meet Amy she is being released from a rehab clinic where she has become sober. Love You, Hate You, Miss You is a story of one girl’s recovery from alcohol. . .yes. . . but also from guilt. This poignant story is a welcome discussion of life after rehab and all the challenges that come as you start to live your life again. Nicely done! **Disclaimer The swearing in this novel make it inappropriate for conservative teens. The ‘f’ word is used frequently and other swears as well. The characters are also frequently found in sexual situations that may be inappropriate for younger teens. ~Allison-Teen Librarian
