Situated Learning home

Imagine a future where information and learning is embedded in our surroundings wherever you are, accessed by touch and initiated on demand

This project aims to provide practical examples of situated learning from around Australia and is dedicated to the use of rfid smart tag technology and its innovative use in learning.

A brief start
One of the first papers on rfid technology and learning was produced in 2006 where a number of ideas and examples were outlined. The concepts outlined initiated further thought and experimentation in the use of these technologies and the term 'Embedded technologies', 'ET's' came about due to the practice of embedding objects  such as tools, books, whatever with rfid tags, that then trigger associated information (e-resources) on a reader device (computer, mobile phone, etc)
Since that time there have been a number of innovative products and projects that are continuing the unique concept of situated learning in an increasingly growing field of areas. Presently one of the leading products is the Australian, Rfid Learning Table , developed by New England Computer Solutions  in NSW.

An example of Learning Table in action
An RTO in Tasmania is now implementing the learning Table in a series of trials with learners in the vocational education sector.

In this case learners can access short segments of audio visual information by swiping an rfid tagged card over the reader area of the table. The resource is then played back providing the learner with quick and relevant information as they need it. Because the learners don't need to use a keyboard, navigate a screen or access links, they find it very quick and easy to use without the need to have high computer skills (if any).

The aim is to fit the training workshops up with the Learning Table and have all the tools and equipment tagged, providing an environment whereby all the 'gear' in the workshops will be able to provide the users with information.
