November 9
1) We talked today about the Energy Conservation EcoReview for Ecoschools. Members present got charts to ask their teachers if they turned off their lights, computers, monitors, printerts and to check if their classroom air vents were free of obstruction. Mac volunteered to come with me to follow the caretakers and find out the works of the school Friday morning. Mac and Ally volunteered to check the lights and curtains after school on friday as well. Ecoschools: A program that schools can be a part of that awards points for the actions that we do to green our school. They award points in 5 categories: Environmental Stewardship (how much we promote the environment), energy conservation, school ground greening (eg. planting trees, weeding), waste management and curriculum components (how much teachers talk about the environment in their lessons). The Eco Club's goal is to get EcoSchool certification on the bronze level, this year. If we get more points, though, we could get silver or even gold certification.
EcoReview: Surveys of the school record for three of the above categories (energy conservation, waste management and school ground greening). The Ecoschools site gives us a chart for the energy conservation and waste management categories. We need to answer some questions about the school's activities to see how we can improve the school's waste or energy consumption. **** We need to do these do be able to get ecoschools certification. The Green Team will probably do the Waste Management EcoReview.
Here is the one we just did:
2) Obviously we also talked about the upcoming fundraiser!

We discussed who will advertise, and who will make the boxes.
I showed some of the items we have for the draw. We will be putting some items together so that several items could be won from each box.

November 3
The fundraiser will really only be going on November 24-27, as those are the days where we are selling tickets. We will not be giving raffle tickets to teachers as many of them will probably forget about the tickets and lose them.
Instead, raffle tickets will be sold on Tuesday and Thursday, November 24 and 26 by: Candice, Crysana and Mac
-We will need more people to do this, so please tell me if you can do rounds to sell ballots period 2 on one or both of these days!
We established the lunch chart, but it will have to be finished next week. If you can do any of these lunches, please tell me, we'd like to have at least two people for each lunch (more for lunch A).
Fundraiser Lunch Chart:
Please note that, if you were able to get a donation from a store, then you'll get to do the raffle box (in which students put their ballots) for that item. If you got a lot of items donated to the cause, then you could ask for someone to help you. Raffle boxes will be put on a table in the Front Foyer.
We decided on our goal: $580
***** Our goal would be doubled if Wal-mart does decide to double the amount we make.
Every day, we will show how much money we made on the previous day by having a tree that we colour in. The more money we make, the higher up the tree would be coloured in brown. EcoReview Chart:

Tips
Sample speech (what I'll be saying)
Hi, I am ________________, member of the Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School Eco Club. We will be doing a fundraiser to buy trees for our school. November 23-27. To raise funds, we'll sell ballots. On these ballots, students will be able to vote on three subjects (favourite grade and subject, as well as most pressing environmental issue) on the ballots, and once they're done, they have the choice of putting their ballot in one of several boxes. When the fundraiser is over, we will pick out one ticket from each box, randomly, and that lucky winner would get the prize that would be assigned to that box (ie. one could only win that prize by putting a ballot in a specific box). However we need help gathering prizes for this cause, so we would like to ask you if you would be interested in donating an item from your store for our environmental cause that would appeal to teenagers in high school. We don't need a large amount, $20 value, less if you can't, and more is always accepted. In exchange, we would advertise your generosity to our school population of 1080 students in our video announcements, posters, the box dedicated to the item you donate, if you decide to do this and other fundraising ideas we can come up with. Your ideas would be accepted as well, of course! A part of the selling will be done at lunch, so there, we could have some of your pamphlets, if you would like. We have flyers and a letter from our teacher supervisor which we could give to you should we come to discuss details at your store, and if you would lie them. I can be contacted at __________ if you should ever want to contact me.
Facts - sound informed!
(mentioned in sample speech)
(not mentioned in sample speech, but could be useful if they ask you questions)
Next week, we get to discuss how we'll fundraise for the event, as well as what we'll get our teachers to do to help reduce the school's environmental footprint.
October 27
We talked about our next fundraiser, and the money we make from that fundraiser will go towards buying trees for a green area at the school. We will have students vote on three different subjects on a ballot, and they must pay to have a ballot (we have decided the price will probably be 50 cents, and 3 for $1). Each ballot has three things students can vote on. To incite people to vote, we will have a raffle for anybody who voted.
Note the change in what people get to vote for (scroll down) in the ballot! The date has also changed: we will have more time to do it! We will be selling the ballots at lunch November 25th and 27th. We will give the teachers ballots to be bought from students in their first period classes. Mackenzie will be making the ballots. (Thank you!). Students will be able to drop off their ballots in boxes. We will have one box for every item donated, so people can put their ballots in the item they want. If you have any questions, or would like to participate in anything but were not here for a meeting, you can e-mail me at gaellegroux@gmail.com or amnestyrocks@hotmail.com.
Table for selling tickets (to be updated :) )
We will have a goal, and a tree that would mark our progress on how much we've raised that we would update during the week.
We decided what stores we wanted to ask for donations for the raffle, and who would talk to who. I'll send everyone information and suggestions on what to say over the phone. I'll ask Mme. Bourque if we can have a letter to formalize the fact that we are a real group. Thank you to Joan for making a flyer to give to the stores for us!

The 350 Event Update (www.350.org)
So, as planned, the 350 day will be October 23, and we will shut off the lights for 5.8 minutes, or 350 seconds. We will also have 2 petitions, one asking the DSBN to allow a green roof, and the other asking the Canadian government to do their part to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions, with a display board and at least 2 people beside it to explain what the petitions are. This way, we could pressure the government and DSBN to do their part to help the environment. There will also be a donation jar, where donations would simply go towards the Eco Club fund for trees (we would like to have a green area on school property with trees and picnic tables).
We will also not have the TV playing information about the event, as this would use electricity, and we should not use electricity in the school. We will instead have an annoucement over the intercom stating when it starts (a countdown to the beginning of the event), a few facts about how we can reduce our carbon footprint after it has started, and a countdown from ten seconds before the end to the end. Adds before the event would also be airing on the annoucements throughout the week. It will also be period 4, at 1:50 (the beginning of class), seeing we cannot have this happening while tests are going on, and there are tests going on only period 2. It would be at the beginning of class so as not to disrupt the class.
October 13
Today, we talked about something completely different from our original fundraiser (though that one is still happening, too). See end of entry for changes happening to our original fundraiser.
The 350 Event (www.350.org)
October 24 is 350 day. 350 is an organisation that is trying to get the CO2 level to 350 ppm (parts per million), compared to our 390 ppm right now. 350 ppm would be the safe amount of CO2 in our atmosphere.
October 23 is the day we will be shutting off the lights for 5.8 minutes and pass a video about 350, the organization, and what we are doing is about. At lunch, we will also have petitions to be signed about the environment and hopefully a donation jar as well. A Display Board accompanying it would also be beside them. An add so students know what is going on will also be airing beforehand.
October 6
We talked about our next fundraiser: We will have students vote on three different subjects, and they must pay to have a ballot (we have decided the price will probably be 50 cents, and 3 for $1). To insite people to vote, we will have a raffle for anybody who voted.
The fundraiser would go towards buying trees for a green area at the school.
The Subjects to be voted on will be:
The Ballot will probably ressemble this:
Name_________
2nd Period_______ (where the winners would have their prize delivered)
Favourite Teacher_______
Favourite Grade 9 10 11 12
Most Pressing Environmental Issue
We will try to have a Ruff Times Article in about the fundraiser.
Ballots to be sold Monday, Tuesday, Friday so November 9, 11 and 13.
If we can, we would like to have stores donate items for us:
