Students will in the computer lab all this week working on their Career Packet and our Living on Your Own project (see week of April 20 to April 24) There will be no weekly quiz, but students should use this week to make up failed and missed quizzes during the lunch hours as the grading period ends April 30.
April 20 to April 24

We will begin disussing the Living on Your Own project. Examples will be shown in class. The class will be broken into groups of three. Students will be looking for a real residence in San Diego County, which they will make a copy of its floorplan. They will be taught how to make a budget.
Tuesday - We will be discussing check writing and how to write checks properly as requested by the American Bankers Association (ABA). We will discuss jobs and the responsibilites of employers and employees.
Wednesday - Leases and Month-to-month rental agreements will be discussed including of the rights the owners versus the rentors. We will discuss the diferent types of taxes and other deductions from paychecks including health and dental care, union dues, voluntary deductions, and court ordered deductions.
Thursday - We will be discussing the many different opportunities the four major military services offer and the differences between them. We will also disucss the different kinds of consumer insurance that will be needed or required by law.
Friday - The weekly quiz. Any last minute disuussions or problems with either the career packet or the Living on Your Own project. March 23 to March 27

We will will then begin working on ambiguous pronouns in sentences. We will also begin reading Chater 25 of TKM.
Homework: Students are to write ten sentences using vocabulary list O. They are to finish Chapter 25 TKM.
Tuesday - We'll go over the vocabulary homework. We'll then take a short reading quiz on Chapter 25 TKM. We will continue working on ambiguous pronouns in sentences. We will also review sentence construction: simple/compound/complex/compound-complex.
Wednesday - We will discuss any situations regarding the Career Packet. There will be a practice punctuation sheet, which we will discuss. The students will take a short reading quiz on Chapter 26 TKM. Students will then begin reading Chapter 26 TKM.
Thursday - We will be taking a short reading quiz, and we will also be taking the weekly quiz today, which is a day early. This is because there will be a presentation by SDSU counselors on Friday. Students will begin reading Chapter 27 in class.
Friday - A short quiz on Chapter 27 TKM. SDSU counselors will be making a presentation today.
March 16 to March 20
This is the week of the California High School Exit Exam. It is crucial that your students come to school this week well rested and fed for the day long tests that will administered on Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday: The class will do all last minute prep for the test going over all the elements and contingencies. Tuesday: CAHESS Wednesday: CAHESS Thursday: We'll take a breather from studying and play a word game that requires team work with prizes for the winning teams. Friday: We'll continue the film TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
March 9 to March 13
For the next ten school days, we will be focusing totally on the CAHSEE, which is March 17 and 18. We will concentrate on the many different types of essays and their respective formats. We will discuss semantic and syntax problems in writing. We will look at the best ways to read the short stories and poems and the strateges necessary to best answer the types of questions given.
March 2 to March 6

We will continue the confusables. Begin Chapter 18 TKM
Tuesday: Short Readining quiz on Chapter 18 of TKM. We will be filling out the Job Applications for the Career Packet. I will supply the blank applications. We will then begin Chapter 19 of TKM.
Wednesday: Short Reading quiz on Chapter 19 in TKM. In preparation of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), we will go over negative and positive connotations of words. Begin reading Chapter 20 in TKM.
Thursday: Review all Literary Terms and vocabulary. We will discuss different types of business documents in preparation of the CAHSEE (warranties/contracts/instructional manuals). We will begin Chapter 20 of TKM.
Friday: The weekly quiz as well as the reading quiz for Chapter 20 of TKM. If there's time, we'll continue the TKM movie up to where we are in the book. February 23 to February 27
There will be no new vocabulary list this week. However students will be expected to learn and master the first three weeks vocabulary (Vocab K, L, and M) for Friday's weekly quiz.
Monday we will go over how to write a business letter. We will be covering both the full block and semi-block styles. These letters are to written to colleges for the career packet. Students are expected to know which career they are going to research. Then we will begin to read Chapter 13 of TKM.
Tuesday we will take the short reading quiz on Chapter 13 of TKM. We will then spend the period in the library where Ms. McGinnis will show everyone the library's resources that the students can use to research their career packets including the addresses to the colleges they will be sending their letters. Students are to read Chapter 14 of TKM for homework.
Wednesday after the reading quiz on Chapter 14 of TKM, we will continue to discuss the career packet and the letters to college. These should be typed up by this week, two copies made of each (one to be sent to the college and one to be placed in the career packet). We will review the Literary Terms. We will then begin Chapter 15 of TKM
Thursday we will take the short reading quiz on Chapter 15. We will once again do a review of all the Literary Terms (it's vital students learn all these terms prior to taking the Exit Exam). We will begin reading Chapter 16 of TKM. Students are to finish the chapter for homework.
Friday we will take the short reading quiz on Chapter 16. We will then take the weekly quiz that will include all of this sememster's vocabulary words and the literary terms.
February 16 to February 20
No school on Monday as it's President's Day. Tuesday, it was decided to no do a new vocabulary list this week as it's been a short week. However, we will pick up where we left off at Chapter 10 of To Kill A Mockingbird. I will hand out the checklist for the Career Packet and answer any questions as we review what will be required from that list. The Career Packet will not be accepted after May 19, so students are urged to turn it in well before that date.
Wednesday we'll review the previous chapter, take the short reading quiz and finish the Literary Terms. We will then begin Chapter 11 of TKM.
Thursday we'll review Chapter 11 and take the short reading quiz and review all the Literary Terms. We will begin reading Chapter 12. of TKM.
Friday we'll do the short reading quiz on Chapter 11 and then take the week's (in this case, the previous two weeks) quiz #16.
February 9 to February 12
This will be a short week as Friday is a holiday. Monday will have Vocabulary M and we will continue the Literary Terms as well as practice some punctuation rules from last sememster. We will begin reading Chapter 9 of To Kill a Mockingbird. Tuesday will be to go over the homework, take a short quiz on Chapter 9 and finish the Literary Terms. Wednesday is a minimum day and I will not be at school. For Wednesday and Thursday, I will have the substitute show a movie The American Teen, which is a documentary about a typical high school in the a midwestern town and the problems facing teens today including stereotyping and bias.

January 25 to January
This week the students will be reading Chapters 4 through 8 of To Kill a Mockingbird. There will be a daily reading quiz on each of these chapters when they begin class. In addition to the weekly vocabulary sentences, students will be required to finish any chapters not finished during class as homework. We will also be looking and discussion the Literary Elements, which are a large portion of the Exit Exam. Students will need to learn them and know how they are used.

January 19 to January 22
The new semester begins. Students will be issued a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird (TKM). As we read through this novel, students are to take Cornel notes on each chapter. Students will also be required to read one chapter for each school day until it's finished.

January 11 to January 15
This week will all be review for next week's final. We will review all the comma, captitalization, apostrophes, italics, quotation marks, end marks, colon, semi-colon, dash, elipsis, and parenthesis rules. We'll also review all 100 words from this semester's vocabulary lists.
January 4 to January 8
The class will be learning how to write an auto/biographical essay. Monday will be spent giving the lecture of format and strategies. Tuesday, students will interview each other in partners to write a biographical essay on each other. Wednesday, all students will wirte the draft and go over it with their partners. Wednesday night as a homework assignment, students will complete the final essay. Thursday and Friday, as part of an oral presentation grade, students will read their essays to the class for grade.
December 21 to January 3
Winter Break
December 14 to December 18
This is the week before the winter break. Monday there will be a power point and lecture on how to construct the final piece of the Persuasive essay, the concluding paragraph. There will be strategies and examples. Tuesday will be review of the entire persuasive essay steps. Wednesday will be a complete vocabulary review of all 100 words this semester. Thursday will be a comoperative learning game. Friday will be an in-class persuasive essay worth 100 points towards their semester grade. They will be required to finish this within the class time and include all the strategies learned over the past three weeks.
November 30 to December 4
We are continuing to work on the progressive essay. Monday and Tuesday will be the introductory paragraph, Wednesday will be the body of the essay and Thursday will be the conclusion paragraph. Friday there will be a quiz on the strategies of essay writing as well as the confusables covered so far in class. There will also be some questions on punctuation and the comma rules.
November 23 to November 27
Thanksgiving Week Holiday

We will be working on the many "confusables" that are in the English language. For example: the differences between compliment and complement. There are almost one hundred of these and they all can't be posted here. However, students can get notes from other students on thes upon their return.
In addition this week, we will begin stratagies on how to write a persuasvie essay. This week will be devoted to writing the Introductoy paragraph. We'll go into specifics such the four sentences making up the introductory paragraph: #1 - The grabing statistic, question, published quote, or anecdote dealing with the subject or prompt. #2 - This sentence should state in a declaritive sentence the prompt. #3 - This will be your thesis statement (your opinion). You need to steer away from using possessive pronouns here. #4 - The three supporting elements (using the series comma) that will make up the body of your paragraph.
The honors class will continue read from Winesburg, Ohio: "The Strength of God," "Respectablilty," and "Tandy." November 9 to November 13
This week will be shortened because Veterans Day, Tuesday, will be a no school day, and Wednesday is a half day. We will be discussing Numbers in Writing and how we either use numerals or write numbers out. This will take place on Monday. Wednesday we will put these rules into practice with a practice sheet. Thursday will be "make up" day. This is reserved for those students to make up quizzes they have either failed or missed because of absense. The progress reports are Friday, and we will be taking the final quiz of the week.
November 2 to November 6

This week we will be looking at the rules of when to properly use the semi-colon and the colon in writing. We will continue to review and practice all the punctuation and grammar rules learned so far.

This week, we're going to take a short break from any new grammar/punctuation and put into practice what the students have learned so far. They are to write a story (in groups of 3) using the following elements: 1. At least 8 of the 10 comma rules 2. No less than 10 vocabulary words 3. At least 5 different capitalization examples 4. At least one each using titles (movie, song, book, CD). The story can be on any subject (high school appropriate) and all the items listed should highlighted. We will then read the stories to the class as part of the oral interpreatation standard. The story will be worth 100 points.
Homework - Write ten complex sentences using this week's vocabulary. Honors Class needs to finish the novel Frankenstein.
October 19 - October 23

This week we will be looking at how to properly punctuate titles such as songs, books, and movies. We will explore which of the titles are italized or underlined and which are inside quotation marks. In addition to this, we will continue to practice the capitalization, comma, and apostrohe rules.

October 11 - October 16

With the apostorphies and comma behind us, we will take a week off from punctuation. I will need a writing sample from each student, so I will put a picture on the screen and ask the students to use their imagination and create a story about the person in the picture. We will then exchange papers and students will correct their peers papers using the knowledge they've learned so far this semester. I will also use these papers to examine the students' writing skills as well as their imaginative abilities. On Thursday, students will have the chance to take any missed quizzes due to absence or make up quizzes they have failed so far as progress reports are due on Friday.

We will also be working reviewing all the comma rules leared in the first five weeks and begin the apostrophe rules as well. The apostrophes, like commas, are some of the most misused and missed punctuation marks in the language and we'll spend quigt a bit of time and practice in class on them.

Sudents, who have now learned the dependent clause comma (comma rule #1) will now go on to comma rules 2 & 3, the series comma and the appositive comma. In addition to this, we will also cover more writing skills using a variety of writing elements that will teach the student how to expand their writing.
HOMEWORK
All students will be asked to put all the vocabulary words into complete sentences. For the entire week, students are to not only memorize and use the vocabulary of the week but to also review all prior vocabulary. It's important to note that students are tested on ALL the vocabuary from previous weeks as well as the current list.
August 31 - September 4 2009

We will begin working on sentence construction including syntax, Main Sentence Trunk (MST), verb phrases, and subjects. We will also begin the first of the ten comma rules beginning with the dependent clause rule #1.

All students will be asked to put all the vocabulary words into complete sentences. It will be due Thursday, August 28. Other homework may be given based on the classes' understanding of the concepts given in class.
