The 5th Grade Farewell Program

First Grade

Welcome, First Grade Parents!

By now your child should be able to hear and keep a steady beat, sing alone and with others, and identify changes in tempo, pitch, and timbre. In the first grade, we will spend a few lessons reviewing, but the majority of this year will be spent reinforcing and strengthening these basic but important musical skills. The first grade program was Thursday, February 11. The program was Western themed. Check out the picture section of the site to see our cowboys and cowgirls!

Final Three Classes

WEEK 1: After discussing high and low throughout the course of this year, today we will learn to sing and use hand signs to read so-mi from notation. We will learn about the lines and spaces on the staff. We will review I've a Pair of Fishes which we learned a few weeks ago to revisit high and low sounds. We will then label the staff, lines, spaces, and note heads, along with so and mi. Today we will actually read a short song called Serra, serra serrador and use our new hand signs to help us sing the pitches. We are learning to read music--what a day!

WEEK 2: This week we will continue discussing louder and softer. We will revisit Serra, serra serrador and review so and mi. We will then discuss all of the components that make a song and choose our own tempo and dynamics to change the feeling of Serra, serra serrador. Today we will also learn about repeat signs in a song called Come Back, My Little Chicks in addition to reading quarter notes and eighth notes. These last few weeks are so very important as we are laying the groundwork for next year when we will begin blazing a trail on the music reading front!

WEEK 3: For our final week of music, I will allow the students to pick their favorite lessons from the year to revisit for our last music class of the year.

Note: Because of our 6 day rotation, the students will attend specials 4-5 times each six weeks. We will not see them on a weekly basis!
