Archiver
Version 1.0
Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6 & 7

Introduction:

Archiver makes it easy for businesses and individuals to archive Google Docs, Spreadsheets and Presentation.
In this documentation there will be references to Google Apps however, this software also works with the standard Gmail version of Google Documents.

The setup and usage is very simple however, this documentation will attempt to cover every detail and therefore looks a bit long.
Don't worry there are very few steps.

_______________

Installation:

Check to see that Google Gears is installed and running.
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click on Tools -> Gears Settings
  • Insure that Local Storage for Docs is marked Allowed
Download Archiver
Archiver.zip

*You will need Read/Write permissions for the C: drive

Unzip the download to Local Disk (C:) on the computer workstation used to access Google Apps.
The correct software location is C:\Apps_Archiver

(Free unzip software, 7zip, can be found at: http://www.7-zip.org/

Click Start, MyComputer,  Local Disk (C:), Archiver_1-1_XP-IE\Apps-Archive

Double Click on the application "Archiver_1-1_XP-IE.exe"

A command window will pop up while the current user's account is archived to the default folder: C:\Archiver_1-1_XP-IE\Apps-Archive

Open the folder Apps-Archive to see your newly created archived folder.
Example:
user-20080823T063637
(User's name - Date - time)

You will also see the text file, ArchiveLog.txt which contains a list of backups run.

If your archive was created then setup is complete and tested.

You will most likely want to change the default archive location.
Open the file C:\Archiver_1-1_XP-IE\appsconf.txt

Change the first c:\Archiver_1-1_XP-IE\Apps-Archive\
to any storage that is accesable to the current user.
This includes: Network drives, USB, firewire, etc.
The format must be the same as above and don't forget the final \
There should not be any other lines or spaces in the config document

Operation

Archiver is meant to be installed configured and then left to do its job automatically.
However, the administrator of the software must decide how often the Archiving will occur.

One of the simplest setups is to run Archiver on startup.
Click Start, All Programs,
Right Click Startup, select All users

Right click in the folder that pops up,
Select New, Shortcut
Browse to: C:\Archiver_1-1_XP-IE\Archiver_1-1_XP-IE-s.exe

Now Archiver will run each time a user logs in.

You might be wondering about that -s bit in the program name. This will run Archiver in silent mode meaning no indication will be given to the user that the program is running in the background.

If you prefer timed archiving please use the Windows Task Manager found at:
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scheduled Tasks

Optional Install:

In order for Archiver to function correctly the file, path, and read permission for C:\Archiver_1-1_XP-IE\appsconf.txt must exist. However, the programs can run from anywhere on the workstation.
This may be handy if you have very strict user permissions and need to run the program from the user's folder.

Restore

You can run Restore_Apps_XP_IE.exe from any workstation. It does not need to be the user's workstation.
However, Google Gears MUST be installed and running on the restore computer.

Very Important!!!
Disconnect from the Internet!
Insure that Internet Explorer is the default browser!
Close all browser windows!
You must have access to the archived file you want to restore. Seems like a no brainer but remember you just disconnected from the Internet and most likely your network.

Get the full path of your locally accessible archive file
Click to run Restore_Apps_XP_IE.exe

You will be asked for the path.
(Tip: If you copied the path and don't want to type it in just right click the blue bar at the top of the window and select, Edit -> Paste)

A backup copy of your current Google Apps data is created and the archive file is installed.

Next you will be asked if the archive file you are opening is for a Gmail account or a Google Apps account.

Select 1 for a Gmail account
Select 2 for a Google Apps account

If you selected 2 you will be asked for your Domain name.
Example: mydomain.com or
DO NOT use the http:// in the name.

Internet Explorer will now open
Enter the archived file's user name
Your archive file will now in the Google Apps interface
From here you can open, read and save files to a desktop folder

Once you are done with your review close IE and go back to the Restore program window.
Hitting Enter will unload the archived file and reset the system back to the way it was before the restore.

Trouble Shooting

Try running Archiver_1-1_XP-IE from the command line

Start -> Run -> type cmd in the run box

At the command prompt type:

C:\Archiver_1-1_XP-IE\Archiver_1-1_XP-IE.exe
