Girls swimming: Raptors' Siedem finishes strong at state

Senior swims personal best in 100
freestyle

By Brad Cochi (BoCoPreps.com)

THORNTON -- The state championship meet is a good place for anyone to swim their best time. It's also a bad place to have an off day. So when Silver

Creek senior Amanda Siedem looked up after swimming the
100-yard freestyle and saw 55.47 on the board, she knew the meet was a success. "I swam my best time in the 100 free, so that was exciting," said Siedem, who finished eighth and beat her last year's time by nearly half a second.

Siedem led Raptors to a 21st-place team finish. She also led off the
13th-place 200 medley relay (Siedem, freshman Madison Pelton, junior Morgan McKean and sophomore Kylie Rembert) and the 13th-place 400 freestyle relay (Siedem, McKean, freshman Sierra Juvonen and Rembert).

After it was all over, Siedem said she enjoyed watching the Raptors young swimmers find their strokes much the same way she did. "This was a rebuilding year but the freshmen we have showed so much heart and
have so much room to improve," Siedem said. "It was really fun to watch all the new girls come through. We had a really big freshman class and a really talented one."

Rembert finished 16th in both the 200 IM and the 100 freestyle. But the
2:17.53 she swam in Friday's 200 IM preliminaries set a new Silver Creek school record, breaking Lindsay Banning's record of 2:19.35 set in 2009.

"I did better in prelims than I did finals," Rembert said. "But I was overall excited with how it all went."

In just her first year speed swimming since converting from synchronized swimming, freshman Olya Martin was the Raptors biggest surprise of the season. She took 14th in the 100 breaststroke on Saturday.

"I felt amazing," Martin said. "I'm definitely gonna stick with it. I feel like next year I'm going to be able to go out there and be even better, hopefully."

Five freshmen joined the Silver Creek swim team this season. Three of them participated in the state finals. Raptors head coach Debbie Stewart will take those numbers any season.

"It's pretty exciting because I just didn't think the young team would be where they're at this year," Stewart said. "The girls worked really hard all through the season and it showed where we were at the end of the season and how they performed."

Coach Stewart's Biography

Coach Stewart grew up swimming in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida at the Hall of Fame pool under the coaching staff of Olympic coach Jack Nelson.  She competed in three national championships from the age of 16.  As a junior and senior in high school Stewart became an All American in the 100 butterfly and was the state champion in the 100 butterfly her senior year.  With these accomplishments Stewart earned a full scholarship to Colorado State University where she continued to swim under the head coach of John Mattos.  While at CSU, she competed in three NCAA national championships.

When Silver Creek opened its doors ten years ago, Stewart was offered the coaching position for both the men’s and women’s swim teams.  The first year the women’s team started with 11 student-athletes.  Stewart’s coaching experience and successes have brought in incredible numbers of athletes to where we have over 40 team members.  In 2009, the women’s swim team earned their first Conference Championship and had their highest placing of fourth at State.  The men’s team started ten years ago with 13 student-athletes.  The team competed as an independent for three years until a district decision was made to delete the men’s swimming program from Niwot high school. At that time, Niwot’s athletes joined the Silver Creek men’s program, making our men’s program size upwards to over thirty athletes.  During the 2008 and 2009 seasons, the men’s swim team earned Conference Championship titles.  In 2008 the men’s swim team made Silver Creek history by bringing the first State Championship trophy to the school.  The men’s team has had 3 individual State Champions and two relay team State Champions over the ten years of Silver Creek’s history.

Stewart has been married for almost twenty-five years and has two children – Kyle, who was a member of the 2008 men’s State Championship team and Taryn, who graduated from Silver Creek in 2011.
