JOHN RONEY - SILVERBIRCH (Effendi Records) August, 2008: Silver Birch String Quartet's CD with jazz-pianist John Roney released! REVIEW: "Combining jazz and classical approaches comes naturally to pianist John Roney and that transcendent ease, shared by first violinist Christian Robinson, permeates this wonderful CD featuring the Silverbirch string quartet. The strings furnish the canvass for Roney's somewhat percussive touch in a refreshing range of styles. They open with Ryuichi Sakamoto's inspiring Bibo No Aozora, featured in the closing scene of Babel, highlighted by percussionist Richard Jackson. Cascara is developed as a syncopated dialogue between Roney and strings. Other highlights: American Gsus, a spiritual reflection on 9/11, the group's stunningly elevated arrangement of Coltrane's Giant Steps, with a middle section featuring cellist Alexandra Lee playing pizzicato. The closer is a joyous and energetic reading of Land of the Silverbirch." -Irwin Block, Montreal Gazette Rating: 5 ("Instant Classic")
