BUY THE YARD BEATS HACKNEY'S TO WIN SILL 2009 MAJORS CHAMPIONSHIP

posted Jul 6, 2009 6:36 AM by matthew.sherman@huschblackwell.com

Buy The Yard 3 - Hackney's 1: No doubt the game would be close and Buy the Yard anticipated needing Tony Granato to lead the team in the playoffs. The scoring started with Hackneys in the bottom half of the 1st Tyler Igunbor hit a solid single and stole 2nd, and proceeded to score on solid hit by Max Yusim. Hackney’s leads 1-0. Tony Granato then lead off the top of the 2nd inning with a HR to right-center field that four hopped to the cars on Lawler avenue to tie the game 1-1. Martin Barr after pitching a solid inning was in a bases load jam in the bottom of the 2nd with only one out. Michael Weldon then made a major contribution by striking out the next two batters to shut down a potential Hackneys rally.  George Sherman pitched a solid 3 innings for the Hackneys after the top half of the 3rd the game is tied 1-1. Hackneys again threatened in the bottom of 3rd.  Tyler Ingunbor starts the inning with triple and then loading the bases with two out against Weldon, the rally was stopped on a ground ball hit by Berto Ansani to Tony Granato for the 3rd out.  Tyler Igunbor then took the mound for Hackneys in the 4th inning (solid as usual) with two outs Tony Granato hits a very high fly ball to right field which lands inches from the foul line in fair play HR #2. BTY takes the lead 2-1. Tony Granato pitches in the bottom of the 4th and completes the inning with 3 strike outs and 1 walk.  Tyler Igunbor strikes out the side in the top of the 5th.  Sid Powell leads off the bottom of the 5th with a walk and is unfortunately called out for leaving early and BTY retires the next two batters. The score is still 2-1 after five.  In the top half of the six Tyler Igunbor gives up a rare walk to lead off hitter Jake Kaufman, on the only past ball in the game given up by catcher Max Yusim the runner steals second and on an over throw advances to 3rd and home plate. Buy the Yard leads 3-1. Hackneys then batted in the bottom half of the 6th with a lot of patience at the plate. Tony Granato fielded a ground ball and proceeded to strike-out the next two batters to end a well played game by both teams.  Congratulations go out to both teams, this was truly a game of inches minus two specific plays the outcome may have been totally different.

Hackney's Win Forces Second Championship Game

Hackney's 7 - Buy The Yard 3: Needing a victory to force a second Championship game, Hackney's combined solid pitching, defense, timely hitting and opportunistic baserunning to squeak by Buy The Yard.  BTY had not lost a game in the double-elimination playoffs.  Hackney's, already with one loss in the playoffs, needed to beat BTY Monday night to force a second game.  Now, the Championship showdown is set for Wednesday, July 1.  In Monday night's game at Central Park East, Buy The Yard got out of the gate fast, pushing across two runs in the top of the first on key hits by Michael Weldon and Tony Granato.  After that, Hackney's settled down and held Buy The Yard scoreless until the top of the sixth, when BTY added its final run.  In the bottom of the second, Hackney's combined a series of "seeing-eye" grounders and good baserunning to tack up two runs to tie the score at two.  Hackney's took the lead in the middle innings, adding 4 runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Hackney's added one more run in the bottom of the 5th.  Pitching for BTY were Michael Weldon, John Hruska, Martin Barr and Tony Granato.  Hackney's pitchers included George Sherman and Tyler Igunbor.

Hackney's 11 -- Poochie's 3: Once again, Hackney's relied on solid defense, good pitching and timely hitting to get by a dogged Poochie's squad. It was knotted 2-2 going into the bottom of the 3rd inning. Poochie's had Patrick Kane on the mound throwing BBs, but in the bottom of the third, Hackney's staged a rally that led to five runs.  From there, Hackney's continued its opportunistic ways to add four more runs in the later innings.  For Hackney's, Berto Ansani and Ford Fishman each made two outstanding defensive plays that kept the Poochie's squad at bay.  Ford knocked down a hot smash at second and threw the batter out.  He also had an outfield assist, making a strong throw into second to nail the runner.  Berto took away a hit making an over-the-shoulder catch of a liner and then also handled a hot smash at shortstop to gun down the runner at first.  Sid Powell, just on hustle alone, contributed big plays that didn't show up in the "book," but certainly influenced the game's outcome. George Sherman pitched the first three innings for Hackney's and was followed on the mound by Tyler Igunbor, who finished the game.  In addition to Patrick Kane, Jake Petit pitched for Poochie's.  Leading the Poochie's offense were Andrew Goldberg (3B) and Corey Schmidt (2B).  With the win, Hackney's will play Buy The Yard in the Championship game on Monday, June 29 at Central Park East.

Hackney's Solid in Victory Over Poochie's

Hackney's 5 - Poochie's 3: Hackney's prooved once again the old baseball adage that good defensive, timely hitting and good pitching win games. Hackney's chipped away at the solid pitching of Poochie's Patrick Kane, taking a 4-0 lead by the 4th. Hackney's Henry Hebson went 3-for-3, and George Sherman pitched 3 innings of shutout ball. He was helped in no small part by a diving catch by Tyler Igunbor at short, who then doubled a runner off second for an unassisted double play. Poochie's Andrew Goldberg made it a brand new ballgame in the top of the 4th by doubling in Jacob Tennant and Brandon Enger. Ethan Ross then singled Goldberg in. Hackney's scratched across a run in the bottom of the 5th, and Igunbor struck out the the side in the top of the 6th to seal the victory.
