What is a Sorority?

A Sorority is a sisterhood. It is a small group of women who work and interact closely together. So much of the college experience is sharing: sharing ideas, sharing concerns, sharing fun, sharing friends. Sorority membership provides a unique form of group experience designed especially for sharing.

Sorority membership enables you to make lasting friendships, to develop leadership qualities, and to better organize your time. Individual growth is encouraged. A member does not become what her group is, but rather it becomes what she is.

All sororities are essentially idealistic, committed to high principles and worthwhile endeavors. The guiding principle of each sorority is that of developing the greatest potential of each member according to her individual talents, skills, and personality. Sorority life is designed to inspire you and to help you get the most from your college experience

4 Reasons To Go Greek

Friendship
- From the moment you become a new member you are surrounded by sisters who genuinely care for you. You will not be alone at college. When you need a helping hand, it will be there. When good things come to you, others will be there to share your happiness. These friends will be your dearest and truest long after your college days are over.

Leadership - Sorority members are given opportunities to show and improve their leadership skills. Sorority life teaches both cooperation and acceptance of responsibility as part of leadership experience. From your earliest days as a new member to being an officer planning events, you will gain invaluable experiences working within a group and leading it.

Service - Each sorority has its own philanthropy. Numerous philanthropic events are put on by each organizations during the year as a chance to help others.  The philanthropy of Sigma Sigma Sigma is the Robbie Page Memorial.  The Robbie Page Memorial provides play therapy rooms for children in the hospital to relax and forget about being sick.  In addition to serving these children, the sisters of Gamma Xi are involved in numerous other acts of service both on and off Barton's campus.

Scholarship - Scholarship is what college is all about. In order to be a sister of Tri-Sigma, one must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and the sorority women's cumulative GPA is higher than the all-women's average on campus.  Sisters are required to fulfill a certain number of study hours each week in order to emphasize the importance of scholastic achievement.  Sisters rarely find themselves without a study partner and many have classes together. Scholarship is one of the fundamental aspects of Sigma Sigma Sigma and school is always put first.

Will the cost of membership be an added burden?

Cost of membership varies among chapters but does not add measurably to the cost of attending Barton College.  All chapters are supported by dues. After some one-time costs in the first year, these dues are only expenses. It has been shown that members of a Greek organization are more financially stable in college compared to non-Greek members.

Are there any practical benefits of membership?

Many immediate benefits are received through membership, including numerous leadership possibilities, academic encouragement, time management and several philanthropic opportunities. However, the bonds created mean you will have inter-generational friendships, support when moving to a new community or even a foreign country, and career networking possibilities throughout your lifetime.

What about all the negative things I've heard about, such as alcohol abuse and hazing?

Unfortunately, the positive side of the Greek life is often deemed not newsworthy.  Greek members on Barton's Campus are involved on campus and in the Wilson community, contributing countless volunteering hours.

Barton College and Greek Life live by a ZERO tolerance hazing policy which EVERY Greek chapter member must live by.  HAZING IS TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY WITH NO EXCEPTIONS. In addition to policies within the Barton community, each chapter's National Organization also has their own polices surrounding hazing that the chapters must abide by.  Sigma Sigma Sigma was the first sorority to adopt a ZERO tolerance hazing policy which still remains in full effect today.  Any student who feels they are being hazed is encouraged to report the hazing to their chapter and campus Greek Life Advisors IMMEDIATELY.
