2011 CLUB OUTDOOR EVENTS DECRIPTION OF AWARDS
FOUNDERS' SHIELDS - These two awards are a testimonial to the dedication, ingenuity and hard work extended by the founding members in turning a bare patch of land into a beautiful bowling green complete with clubhouse and out buildings. They are presented to the winning team of two (pairs) at the conclusion of separate tournaments, one held for the ladies and the second for the men members. The tournaments normally extend over a two day period. PRESIDENT'S TROPHY. Presented as a honorific to the club president of the day and won by the team of three, (mixed: male and female) with the highest point score in a mixed triples competition which normally extends over a two day period and is followed by a BBQ Dinner. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS. These are the most prestigous tournaments for the club. They are all singles events in a form of a round robin competition, normally extending over a two day week-end but can include an evening round. Winners are declared in four separate tournaments - Ladies Champ - Mens Champ - Ladies Novice Champ and Mens Novice Champ. The other competitors for Ladies Champ and Mens Champ are consoled by the thought they can try again next year, whereas, in the novice class, they are - well, out of luck - it's a one shot deal. GUNN AWARD. This trophy was donated in the name of Nancy Williamson, a founding member, a past club president and a life member. It is presented to the winning three-some in a triples competition. Teams are a mix of ladies and men and the tournament is usually completed over two days. The name "Gunn" represents the Clan Gunn, one of the oldest and most northerly clans of Scotland. The motto of the Clan; "either Peace or War" provides an insight into their character - no fuzzy, grey areas for these folk. The bowling is followed by a social featuring a "pot luck" style of finger food. WALTER MACLEAN TROPHY. Sponsored by Walter MacLean (past president and current member of club executive) this is a weekly event with teams determined by draw. Players accumulate points over the season, recording their success (or lack thereof) on a master score board on display in the clubhouse. The highest aggregate score wins. THE HAGGIS. This is a mixed triples tournament with a wierd twist or two to make it interesting. Strickly a fun event, played out in a single day and enjoyed by all. The play is followed by the Haggis Dinner in our clubhouse. (what more can possibly be said about "haggis"?) CO-OP TROPHY. - This is an annual tournament sponsored by the Peninsula Co-Op between the Sidney club and the lawn bowling club of Central Saanich. Normally a two-day event featuring mixed triples play, prizes donated by the Co-Op and great comradeship between clubs. SILVER TRAY - Awarded to the winners of an annual Ladies Pairs competition. SILVER CUP- Awarded to the runners-up of the Ladies Pairs competition. The McMynn Trophy - This is similiar to the Walter MacLean but is restricted by age. It's a weekly event held on Tuesday afternoons. The trophy is named in the honour of Bob (deceased) and Do ( Doreen) who is currently a social member, in recognition of their active involvement and financial support in the early days of the club. The trophy is a clay mug designed and created by another club member, Kate TilsonPEWTER MUG TROPHY - Introduced in 2011, this trophy is awarded to the winning team of Mens Pairs in a club tournament held in late summer. This is a companion tournament to the Ladies Pairs competition which features fine silver trophies. The pewter mug seeks to represent the more "base" values held by the men members and, judging by appearance - it has.CAPTAINS' TROPHY - Introduced in 2010, this trophy, in the form of a plaque, is awarded to the player with the highest aggregate score over the season, playing in the competitive Tuesday morning Club draw. It was named in honour of all lawn bowlers who at some time in their career served their country with distinction while holding the military rank of Captain or (and there is some debate here; this award should really be called the "Captains Cup." It is named after the highest award presented in the Banbury and District Aunt Sally League. The league, (huge participation requiring 7 divisions), is comprised of teams who compete in throwing sticks (6x2 inch) a distance of 30 1/2 feet to knock off a target sitting on a platform that is raised up from the floor by 2 1/2 feet. The terms used include; "Sticker-Up", "Doll or No Doll", "Caller"(as opposed to umpire) ,"Three Sticker" and "Blob". And you thought lawn bowling a little quaint! MOST IMPROVED BOWLER AWARDS - Selected by a committee of the chairs of ladies and mens games, the head coach and the president and is based on the year's performance VICTOR SUTHERLAND AWARD - Donated by the club and named after the club's first president who, by his dedication and leadership, was instrumental in forming the club. Victor wished to recognize club members who went out of their way in devoting time and effort to first create and then maintain a successful and happy organization. This recoginition continues in the yearly Victor Sutherland Award. Victor, who passed away several years ago at the early age of 70, would be proud to see our current, active and expanding membership.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2010/11 WINTER EVENTS SHORT MAT INTERCLUB LEAGUE (SATURDAY) CHAMPIONS

Additional 2010 Tournament Results
The Beauty and the Beast tournament was won by the Beasts.
The Tsawwassen Visit of 18 Aug. was a great success. We lost the game count but had a good time and met some really nice people.
- International Day was played on "Windy Saturday" 31 July. It was a close match but the colonists prevailed with 8 wins, 1 tie against 7 wins and 1 tie. Well done Canada.
- Connie Priestly Memorial Challenge Trophy - Ladies Triples, was played on 30 July and after a close battle was won by Sidney ladies.
Heart Trophy. The Sidney team of; Gary Fletcher, Anna Wallace, Germaine Fletcher and Larry Jacobs won the honours. The second Sidney team came in second and Oak Bay was third.
The Battle of the Sexes was won by the ladies.
Canada Day Breakfast Bowl This event was won by the team skipped by Adele Bryson.
The Cowichan Club visit to Sidney was yet again a great success. In spite of poor weather (what - again?) the bowling was fun and the lunch impressive. The final tally had the Sidney club in front but this was only a minor detail; what was important was the comradeship, good sportsmanship and friendly competition.
