ADVANCED COACHING OPPORTUNITY

A reminder to all clubs, and members, that the Emerging Athlete Program 2012 will be holding advanced training courses in your zone this summer. Please encourage all of your tournament bowlers, and anyone who is interested in getting involved in more competitive play, to take this opportunity to improve their game.

There will be four opportunities to take this course during the summer:

Richmond LBC 26-27 May

Courtenay LBC 02-03 June

Cowichan LBC 05-06 June

Vernon LBC 09-10 June

While the focus is to identify and develop gifted and talented bowlers, this course is a great opportunity to have top coaches assist you in your quest to improve your bowling. There is no age restriction, and there is a maximum of 16 students per course, ensuring lots of individual as well as group instruction. The cost of the course is $40.00 per person.

As well, BC Bowls is in the process of identifying potential members of the to-be-formed Team Thunderbird, which will give the members valuable bowling experience against other provincial and state teams. Attendees of this course will have the added opportunity to be assessed as potential members of Team Thunderbird.

For more information, please contact Stephen Forrest - (604) 484-5516 or (250)731-6375.

COACHING TIP(S)

TIP #1  -  Stretch and warm up before bowling.  Its a good idea to tone the body up a little with some gentle stretching exercises before the game starts.  The Lawn Bowler's Handbook, pages 43-45 provides guidance.

TIP #2 -  When bowling its important to hydrate.  Bring a water bottle with you and get into the habit of consistently using it in the 8th end, even if you don't feel you need to.  Of course, don't limit yourself, take as much water as you need.

TIP #3 - Layer Up to be Warm.  There can be significant changes in temperature as the game continues so dress in layers so that you can keep up with mother nature.  Wear a hat or, at least, a sun visor.  Remember your sun screen lotion.

TIP #4 - Keep your head in The Head.  Stay in the game there is plenty of time to socialize.

TIP #5 - Good Bowling is Fun Bowling.  Fun Bowling is Good Bowling.

Tip #6 - BOWL FOR FUN   Bowlers soon forget losing a game but they seldom, if ever, forget poor sportsmanship, whether its directed to an opponent, a team mate or a spectator. Its good to win but its more important to have fun so remember the adage - "play for fun and the wins will come".

Tip #7 - A look at three positions and some of their important attributes

SKIP    - exhibits "people skill" and is able to encourage, uplift and inspire teammates

               - demonstrates sportsmanship to opponents, win, loose or tie

"Should Keep It Pleasant"  works well as a slogan for SKIPs

VICE  - attentive and supports team strategy by delivering key and varied types of

                    shots

            - provides accurate scoring

"Very Intently Contributes Effectively" as a slogan for the VICE not quite so   good, but gets the message across.

Lead - focused on the game and on each bowl as it is delivered

                - learns from each bowl played and makes adjustments

" Let Each Aim(ed bowl) Deliver"  (OK - so maybe the LEAD doesn't need a slogan!) but if you can come up with a better one send it in to the webmaster.

A thought for the day coming from someone who has way too much time on his hands

"focus only on the bowl in hand which is worth many in the head".

                MEMORIES FROM 2010

THE FIRST YEAR NOVICES AND THE SECOND YEAR BOWLERS had their own fun draw every Thursday night from early June to season end.  The objective of the evening draw was  to bowl together without stress and learn the game so the new bowlers would be comfortable joining the scheduled club draws.  This was the draw 24 June/10.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Lawn bowling is a hard game to figure.  One day you'll go out and hit the jack into a pocket of your opponent's bowls, you'll use too much grass and consistently end up 20 ft from the jack, and then you can't get the weight right and you send three bowls into the ditch.  The next day you go out and, for no reason at all, you really stink!

AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES

Avoid  cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to  hold them while you chop.

Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about  lifting the toilet seat by using the  sink.

For high blood pressure sufferers:  simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the  pressure in your veins.  Remember to use a timer.

A  mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from  rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze  button.

If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of  laxatives; then you'll be afraid to cough.

You only need two  tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape.  If it doesn't move and  should, use the WD-40.  If it shouldn't move and does, use  the duct tape.

Remember:  Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

If you  can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical  problem.

Daily  Thought:
SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKE SLINKIES; NOT REALLY  GOOD FOR ANYTHING BUT THEY BRING A SMILE TO YOUR FACE WHEN PUSHED  DOWN THE STAIRS.

NOW THIS LOOKS LIKE A REALLY BAD DAY
