New Members' Page

The "life line" of our club is the new member.  If we don't attract and keep new members our club will simply cease to exist.  Its never easy to join a new club; even for the most out going person.  There is much to learn - protocols of the game - how things are run - who people are - where things are - how to participate.  The list seems endless but at some point the new member starts to feel comfortable.  The purpose of this page is to make this transition to comfortable quicker and smoother.

THE CLASS OF 2010

            BETTY  CARTER

Betty is a new arrival to Sidney.  A long term resident  of  Hamilton Ontario, she    finally saw the light and moved toSidney by the sea.  Betty is an experienced lawn    bowler having been a member of the Churchill Fields Club in  Hamilton Westdale
for  seven years and the Ancaster Club for three more years.   After  moving to the wet coast she proved to have her priorities   in order.  She joined our club first and then went about finding some place to live. Betty was active in our winter program.  She plays a mean game of cribbage and dusted off her darts to join the ladies team as they answered the mens' challenge to a darts match.  Many of you likely spoke with Betty at the St Patrick's Day party.  Next time you see her make a point of welcoming her to the club -  its clear that Hamilton's loss is our gain.

BOB ORCHARD and JOAN WOOD

Bob Orchard joined the club as a full member after taking part in training session #2. Bob was raised on the Island and after being lured away by the oil and metals industries for 30 years or so to earn a living,  he retired from the work force and came back to his roots. Welcome back, Bob. This man is an avid photographer who likes to travel to far off places (65 countries in all). And what does he do in these foreign places? Why, take pictures of course. A member of the shutterbug club and the Lions, he also has time for biking and walking and now, lawn bowling. Joan Wood is another one of those "locals" who strayed away but finally saw the light and returned. Born and raised here,  Joan returned about 31/2 years ago. Welcome back, we missed you.  Joan took part in the training session with Bob but has decided to wait awhile before taking on the game. She  joined as a social member and immediately had an impact by helping out with the kitchen and the lunch auction during the battle of the sexes tourament.  (Here is an update - Joan is now bowling with us and doing well too)

When you see them, be sure to welcome them to the club.

MARYANN and JOHN LITTLE

Maryann and John are long term residents of Sidney but they have been pretty busy over the years which explains why they waited until now to join the best club on Vancouver Island. John gained expertise in forest protection over a 45 year career with the BC forest service and as a consultant. His activities included a contract with the USAF to design a protection plan for a huge forest reserve in the US. Both are volunteers of the highest order. They are Commonwealth Games mavens having served as volunteers at both the Malaysian and Australian games (unavailable for the Victoria games). Maryann is currently active with the Sons of Norway. Both are avid genealogists with Maryann holding the position of family historian (apparently one-half of Saskatchewan can and do claim her as a relative). One of their hobbies is scrabble which is a good past-time for an author (John has ten published books to his credit). They both enjoy travel, golf, curling and fishing. They are "people persons" and already good bowlers. We are happy to have them as members.

 Peter and Marie Rott

Marie and Peter joined the club and jumped right in making an immediate impression. They are well suited to the sport of lawn bowling and a great fit to our club. Marie is an active gal with all kinds of interests. She is a member of the Red Hatters, loves to read, play Mah Jongg and does crafts with special emphasis on custom greeting cards. As for Peter, well Peter is a little dull.  Dull that is until you have the opportunity to get to know him and experience the twinkle in his eye and his quirky sense of humour.  He was born in Berlin . Coming to Canada in 1954, he became a Canadian citizen and quickly lost whatever accent he brought with him. He was a tailor in Germany but left this trade when he came to Canada finding various employment with companies such as Goodyear Tire and Canadian Linen until his retirement. Marie is a New Brunswick gal who spent some time on a working farm before joining the office staff at International Freight in Calgary. The two got together in Calgary and now their blended family includes 10 grandchildren and a bunch of great-grandchildren. As a couple they were first introduced to Vancouver Island when they house sat for Marie’s sister in Sooke. That particular winter was a fine one and when they returned to Calgary to face a late winter storm they decided to make a permanent move and nine years later they are still here. When you next see Marie and Peter ask them for some juicy news on their neighbour - Carol Post.

Dorothy Wright & Bill Tschirhart

Bill grew up in Kitchener-Waterloo, ON and moved to Calgary, AB following a teaching career to take up the position of National Development Coach at the National Training Centre for the Canadian Curling Association. There he met his partner, Dorothy, a native of Grande Prairie, AB who played on one of the elite curling teams in Bill's programme.
Bill & Dorothy moved to North Saanich, BC when she inherited her father's house on Bakerview Place with a view of Sidney Strait. An avid sailor, Bill purchased a Catalina 28 MkII before they actually made the move west in May of 2006.
Dorothy is an active member of The Newcomers' Club participating in bridge, hiking and golf. Bill keeps himself out of trouble by spending time in his home workshop turning projects like custom pens, pepper mills, bowls and other objects on his lathe.
Both Bill & Dorothy are active members of The Glen Meadows Curling Club where this coming season they are starting a "stick league". If any lawn bowl members are interested in playing the game without the stress and strain of a slide delivery, see either Bill or Dorothy for more information.
Lawn bowling has always been on Bill's "to do list" and this spring he and Dorothy signed on for the novice lessons with Ron Leslie and his instruction staff. Bill is a chartered professional coach with Coaches of Canada and wishes the members of the SLBC to know how expertly Ron and his instructors have helped new lawn bowlers not only learn the basic skills but also to feel at home at the SLBC!

    Patricia Kronthaler

Meet Patricia Kronthaler. Patricia was born in Glasgow. She decided she didn’t care too much for oatmeal, haggis and cold rainy days, so off she went to Libya. A little unusual destination for a young Scottish lass. You may be thinking why not Canada like many of her ancestors and other old Scots like our own Walter MacLean, but wait I have yet to report she was in the employ of an American oil company (ah, now it makes sense). It all worked out for her in Libya as there she met her husband to be, a Canadian, born in Prince Albert and also employed in the oil industry. After marriage the adventure really got rolling. After an initial 5 ½ years in Libya, Patricia went on the move with lengthy stops in Vancouver, Calgary, Bakersville in North America, a return to Libya, and stops in; Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Pakistan (from 88 to 92 where Patricia kept busy teaching English and where she traveled extensively throughout the region ). An exciting professional life and , as Patricia describes it - an enjoyable one. Unfortunately shortly after retirement Patricia lost her husband to lung cancer. She now spends her time between Brentwood Bay and Fairhaven/Bellingham Washington where she continues her interest in history through university courses. Although history in general interests her she leans towards European and Indian history. Perhaps a return of the old British Empire would please her. In any event, Patricia is a welcomed addition to our club. Next time you see her, say hello.

JOHN  ROSS

John is an Ontario lad from Thunder Bay (Fort William) who got fed up with the harsh winters, the pesky mosquitoes in spring and summer and the isolation of this Northern Ontario community (how many times can you visit Kakabeka Falls) and moved south to the Elmira/Stratford area. Here he gained employment with the Stratford School District and became its Operations Manager learning enough about school bus operations that he bought a school bus business. He owned and operated the business in Elmira for the next 16 years as he and his wife raised their family of 5 - one son and four daughters. John tried to retire at this point and he moved to the Wet Coast, settling in Sidney with wife and one off spring. Retirement lasted all of 6 months. Seeing an opportunity to enter into retail sales he bought the TruValue Hardwood store which he operated for the next eight years. He closed the store and retired a second time. So far this has lasted a year and may have stuck. John has his son living in the area but the rest of his family are in Ontario - Windsor, Toronto and Thunder Bay with Thunder Bay being the home of his three grandchildren. John is active in his church and in the Knights of Columbus. He was introduced to our club by Dennis Courchene and has already demonstrated a talent for the game. Say hello to John the next time you see him and if you ever see Dennis playing against him - put your money on John.

  Joan  Primeau

Joan is from Ponoka, Alberta (yes, Susan, there is a Ponoka ) where she and her two sisters helped their parents operate a farm (visualize little house on the prairie without the annoying boy children). After a stint of farming Joan tried her hand at other tasks - at one point she was a book keeper in a family business, a licensed practical nurse and then retails sales with Shoppers’ Drug Market in Sidney. Joan’s husband, Cyril, is a social member of the club but still considers golf a game more worthy of his attention than lawn bowling (give him time - as he gets older he may get wiser). Cyril is a talented handyman. Our new storage shed is an example of his workmanship. The couple have five children between them who have produced eight grandchildren, some on the Island and the others not far away in Alberta. In the past, Joan has been active in 5 pin bowling and badminton and now is enjoying lawn bowling. She loves to play bridge (the kitchen variety) is also a crafts person who does needlework, petit-point and other stuff I can’t spell nor comprehend.   They are good friends with the Fletchers (spending their time  playing  "Hand and Foot" ) and are a welcomed addition to the club.

Lino and Marjorie Sacilotto

Marjorie and Lino are relative newcomers to the Island having moved to the Tanner Ridge area in 2004.  They were long time residents of Kimberly where both were very active in community affairs. Marjorie was a member of the School Board, volunteered at the library, hospital auxiliary and was president of the Home Support Service.  Lino while performing his duties as a millwright found time to be the president of his local union, serve on the Kimberly town council and was chairman of the Hospital Board.  Somehow they also found time to raise their three children who coincidentally all live in the Victoria area.  Presently they take it “easy” by being active five pin bowlers, gardening, kayaking, walking and of course now are lawn bowlers.  They would like to express their thanks to Henry Tait who convinced them to join our club.

Gerd Berger

Gerd and Jutta emigrated from Germany to Canada in 1955, after their arrival they had a thirty-six foot ketch built in Holland; after out-fitting and provisioning the boat the two of them sailed up the Rhine River then up the Mosel, went through the French canals and down the Rhone to the Mediterranean where they spent the next eight years enjoying "the good life".  Originally a bricklayer by trade Gerd volunteered as a firefighter in West Vancouver then later on Pender Island. While living on Pender Island a traumatic event compelled him to become a volunteer first aid attendant at a time in his life when most of us would be shedding serious responsibility.  He at one time was a competitive badminton player and a "fair" golfer.  Gerd and Jutta moved here to the peninsula in 1995 and now in 2010 has become one of the regulars at lawn bowling and short mat bowling.  Welcome to the club Gerd.
