Welcome!

Greetings from the Executive Director
Sharon B. Lewis

Hello and welcome to our newly updated website.

SCDAA-Central Alabama Chapter, commonly known as The Sickle Cell Foundation, is proud to be able to continue to provide you with information to help you understand sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease.

If you have sickle cell disease, we want you to better understand the disease so that you can make decisions about your life and your care. We also want you to learn about some great health strategies, eating strategies, pain management strategies and medications that can help treat your disease.

As you know, sickle cell disease affects every aspect   of a person's life. The Sickle Cell Foundation is available to assist familes with these challenges. Our organization wants to make sure you get help needed.

We also provide referrals to programs and services available in our community, including prescription drug assistance. At the Sickle Cell Foundation we work to connect you with emotional support from others who have experienced the sickle cell disease journey.

Our new website is part of our renewed effort to provide education resources at your finger tips on how to live with sickle cell disease and how it impacts you and your family.

We hope the information on our website is helpful. Please revisit our website regularly, and don't forget to join us on Facebook.

Best wishes,

Sangart suggests the addition of MP4CO to existing treatment protocols may alleviate pain associated with a sickle cell crisis. More HERE

Nitric oxide does not appear to improve treatment of sickle cell pain attacks. This is according to a new report published in JAMA. Among patients with sickle cell disease, treatment of a vaso-occlusive crisis (characterised by episodes of severe pain) in the hospital with inhalation of nitric oxide gas for up to 3 days did not result in a shorter time to resolution of the pain, compared to patients who received placebo, according to a study in the 2 March issue of JAMA/Archives: JAMA. Read more HERE  One of Alabama's own, Dr. Howard at the University of Alabama at Birmingham participated in this important JAMA report.

Our annual Sickle Cell Foundation fundraising Gala is our biggest fundraiser. The gala is considered by many in Birminigham as a "must be there" event, in support of the Sickle Cell Foundation.

Like the walkathon this event has been growing  every year, and provides an opportunity to the who's who of greater Birmingham to support the  work of the Sickle Cell Foundation, while at the same time enjoying a great evening, with great people and  great entertainment - Birmingham style.

Last  year’s walk provided the Sickle Cell Foundation with much needed funds to assist individuals with Sickle Cell when they need help.

Medicines and equipment, dental and vision care is available and many other services are provided that families need to help them cope financially and emotionally with this disease.

The walk is rotated between Talladega, Sylacauga and Anniston. Local businesses, community groups and volunteers continue to work to make each year’s walk a success.
