Shuksan Middle School Physical Education/Health
Mindy Galbraith ext. 5400
One goal of Physical Education is to teach students the importance of being physically active, enjoying physical activity, and learning skills that will help them safely engage in a variety of activities. In order to meet these goals students need to be prepared and present for full participation in class. As a Physical Education staff, our goal is to provide a safe and positive learning environment for the students. However, this requires students to take responsibility and engage in their own learning.
Purpose: To work cooperatively with peers and teachers to improve physical fitness and develop healthy lifestyle habits.
Content Area Standards to be met: · Demonstrates healthy fitness levels in cardio strength, muscle strength, and flexibility. · Demonstrates and applies skills, rules, and strategies in the PE setting. · Develops health and fitness plan. Maintains or exceeds cardiovascular fitness standards on a consistent basis. · Safely and appropriately participates in physical and health activities.
Standard-based scoring or grading: · Students will be assessed throughout the trimester in each of the four standards listed above. · Students will receive a score of 1-4 on each assessment. The scores reflect whether the student has met standard or not. This maybe different from your students’ other classes system of scoring. · In order to give your student a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F), the score will earn a letter grade that reflects whether the student has met standard or not. For example, if your child earns a 3 (meaning the student met standard), a student earns a 75%, which equals a letter grade B in PE. · This form of scoring will help you and your child know what exactly he or she needs to do to improve in order to meet grade level expectations. See the rest of the parent packet and Shuksan PE website for more information.
Classroom Rules: 1. Follow all Shuksan School Rules 2. Students behave in a safe and respectful manner that allows peers to learn and the teacher to teach. 3. Students should be on time, dressed in appropriate gym uniform and seated in their squad line at the appropriate time. Discipline: Progressive consequences for inappropriate behavior are outlined in the Make Your Day handout. This handout should be read with your child. When a student chooses to act in an unsafe manner and/or prohibits the continuation of the learning process the student chooses step 4 in the Make Your Day program and may be sent to the office for administrative actions. Student Expectations: Every student is expected to dress down in the PE uniform, participate, and work cooperatively with the teacher and peers. If a student has an excused absence on a PE day or comes to school with a parent note explaining an injury or illness (students will not be able to call home, the excuse must be pre-arranged), the student is responsible for making up that missed day. If the absence or excused nonparticipation occurs on Fitness Fridays or during the fitness assessments, the student must come after school at 3:05 to attend the make-up session. Any other day must be made up by completing a half-hour of physical activity and have a parent/guardian or coach sign the PE make-up form. It is the student’s responsibility to get the make-up form from his/her PE teacher or from the Shuksan website and return it to his/her PE teacher. If a student has more than 5 absences that are not made-up in a semester, if will be difficult for the student to earn a score higher than a 2 in the areas of participation and skill development. **Unexcused (without parent note) nonparticipation may not be made-up! Students must dress in PE uniform even if not participating. **Continual noncompliance with the uniform policy results in the student choosing steps in the Make Your Day program and/or office referrals. Supplies: Shuksan PE t-shirt, lace-up athletic shoes, solid colored athletic shorts and/or sweats (no writing). Appropriate PE attire consists of a Shuksan PE t-shirt covering the stomach at all times during activities, shorts/pants pulled up to waist level, and shorts reaching mid-thigh length. No jeans, cut-offs, spaghetti string tank tops, or cargo style shorts/pants. Students need to provide their own combination lock (no key locks) and each student will be assigned a PE locker to use. |
