Welcome to the our dojo website.

This site has been designed to offer a comprehensive introduction to our martial friends and all persons interested in Shizen Dojo activities.

Ours is a full-time dojo, offering classes on Sunday through to Thursday. Class times vary from mid-morning to late aftertoon or early evening to allow greater accessability for people in today's busy world - there are certain to be class times to suit you!

Located in Melbourne (Australia) our dojo is interested in the preservation of ancient traditions, whilst helping its students to attain a greater sense of happiness, confidence, and personal clarity through the practice of effective self-defence techniques and meditation.

We are affiliated with a number of  kobudo and bujutsu organisations, as well as independent teachers in Australia and overseas.

Dojo membership:

In order to train in our dojo, you must become a member of our budo family. Students pay an annual enrolment fee ($80), which is designed to cover all administrative costs for the year. Newcomers are provided with a membership card, certificate of entry into the dojo, and a copy of our beginner's manual: Kiso no Densho - The Book of Foundation.

Dojo membership also entitles you to online access to our instructors so that they may give you tips to help with your training and answer any questions you may have if you are isolated from the dojo.

Naturally enough, potential students are always welcome to come along and try a complementary class before commiting to the dojo.

Class structure:

Each of our classes run for 2 hours and incorporate a variety of principles, including warming-up, fundamentals, self-defence training, and weaponry. Certain classes also include meditation and energy work ("kiko").

In order to give you a more realistic understanding of self-defence, training in our dojo is conducted indoors and outdoors. Our primary objective is to give our students a proper martial education, while making them fully aware of the responsibility of being a martial artist.

Training fees:

Payment for classes is in the form of a monthly training fee ($120 per calendar month). This fee enables you to train in any of the standard classes held throughout the month in a cost-effective manner. It also shows your dedication to the dojo.

Tokubetsu geiko - special training:

Outside of the standard fee structure, special workshops and training camps are held on a regular basis throughout the year. These events are designed to strengthen our understanding of particular principles, and sometimes feature guest instructors from other dojo.

The Shizen Ryu Dojo is dedicated to teaching its students realistic warrior arts along with meditation and metaphysical concepts.
The warrior arts studied at the dojo are kobudo forms, meaning martial arts that were developed hundreds of years ago as a means of true self-protection.

The unarmed aspect of our training is vast, and should be considered the primary area of study. All throughout training, regardless of what we may be studying specifically, the goal is to make the movements effortless.

True speed and power stem from gaining greater proficiency in natural movement, not from having to rely on agility or muscle strength, which deteriorate with age.

Have you ever wondered why the most skilful and venerated teachers of the martial arts are well into their old age? It's because they learnt to tap into this effortless way of doing things and were smart enough to live that long.

We must learn this "old person's budo" while we are still young. In that way we will be able to dedicate the rest of our lives to training.

At our dojo, all forms of traditional Japanese weaponry are studied. For the sake of familiarity, each weapon is usually studied for at least one month before moving onto the next.

The skill then comes in finding the commonality between each weapon form. In this way, you will attain a greater proficiency in all weapons even when we are not training in them specifically.

It is also important to understand the relationship between armed and unarmed bujutsu - techniques which may be applied with weapons should also work without weapons and vice-versa.

"There are people in the world who think that even if you learn martial arts, this will not prove useful when a real need arises. Regarding that concern, the true science of martial arts means practicing them in a way that they will be useful at any time, and to teach them in a way that they will be useful in all things."
