Volunteering at SMS

Parent involvement is just as important at the middle school as it is at the elementary level.   It takes the administration, staff, teachers, and parents working together to provide the best experience for our children. In addition to helping out in the classroom, there are several other ways that you can help out in the school.  All volunteers are welcome and no previous experience is necessary to help out.  We would love to put your interests, talents, and skills to work!

To join in on the fun and work, send your name and e-mail address to smsvolunteers@gmail.com and you will receive an electronic volunteer form or if you prefer, complete the volunteer form and return it to the office.  You also must fill out the background check form and turn it in to the school office.  Please turn in the forms as quickly as possible so we can get your name entered on the volunteer computer.

Signing up to Volunteer
If you are able to volunteer in any way, shape or form you can help to make this school even better.  All volunteer opportunities will be listed on this website. Check out the Current Volunteer Opportunities on this page for up to date information about current volunteer needs, along with the dates and times required.  Those on our email list serve will also receive email updates about volunteer opportunities. Volunteers make a big difference and the time you give is greatly appreciated!

Background Checks
Due to our concern for the safety of each child, we conduct background checks annually on all school volunteers.  It typically takes about two weeks to complete the background check once the form is submitted.  The school district covers the $5 fee for each background check.

Sometimes this check can be a time consuming process so we thank you for your patience!

You will need to complete a new background check and volunteer form every year.

Tracking volunteer hours
The SMS PAC volunteer sign-in is computerized! When you arrive to volunteer, check in at the PAC computer, find your name badge and you are ready to go! Before leaving simply sign out of the computer and hang up your badge. Our computer programs tracks each and every hour of volunteer time, allowing us to easily generate reports for employee volunteer funds, and those required by the state.

Last year our volunteers logged in hundreds of hours of time for Sherwood Middle School. Each and every one of those hours is important to helping the school, and our students, function at their highest capacity.
