159th Scout Group

http://www.159glasgowscouts.clyderegion.net/

Welcome to the scout troop!
You'll find lots of information and pictures about what the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts can achieve and have fun doing. Follow the links to find out more about each group and see the photos of what we get up to.

Multi-faith
The Scout Movement is completely multi-faith/inter denominational and  that’s no better in evidence than here at Sherbrooke. Across the leadership team and sections we have members from 6 different faiths/beliefs and over a dozen schools are represented too. So, we really do mean it when we say “all welcome”.

Adult Support

We presently have a volunteer Leadership Team of about a dozen across the sections all of whom really enjoy working with the young people. Our leaders cover a wide spectrum of skills and interests and it’s fair to say we’re all ages, shapes and sizes too. Scouting is a great way to “give something back” to society and the local area and we‘re always looking for other adults to join in the fun. No specific skills / interests are required and you’d be very welcome in the Group no matter the level of commitment that you feel you can give. The younger sections in particular (Beavers and Cubs) could do with some additional support but there can never be too many leaders so our Scout and Explorer Scout sections would also welcome “new blood”. Why not give the Group Scout Leader a ring and get involved...we promise you’ll not regret it and it’s a great contrast to whatever you do through the week. Stuartmyuill@live.co.uk        07901 511483

Beaver Scouts

The Beavers meet on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 – 7.30pm.

Our Beaver Motto is "Fun and Friends" and that is exactly what we do – have fun and make new friends. We have lots of different things to do from games and activities in the hall to nature rambles and visits to local places of interest – last session we went to Blair Drummond Safari Park and had a great time. We also have sing songs, learn about how to keep fit and look after our environment, do lots of handcrafts, go on Treasure Hunts as well as having the opportunity to gain badges and awards. Beavers really are great fun and we’d welcome any youngster aged 6 or 7 along to the Colony.

Cub Scouts

The Cubs at Sherbrooke welcome all young people aged between 8 and 10.5 years old. We are a lively, exciting and friendly Cub ‘Pack’ with young and enthusiastic leaders. We have a very varied programme allowing Cubs to earn at least 2 badges each term and we try to get outdoors as much as possible. In the last 6 months Cubs have been climbing at Braehead and mounting biking in Pollock Park as well as activities at the church hall such as learning about first aid and cooking on fires without utensils! There have also been two opportunities to spend nights away from home at nearby Scout Activity Centres which have been great. What will happen in the next 6 months.…!?

Shelter Building at Cub Camp May 2011

We meet every Tuesday during term time between 7 and 8.30 pm. If you would like to join the fun or find out more, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the Cub leader:         Andy Singleton

Scouts

Preparing to go on the water @ Lochgoilhead

The Scout Troop meets at the Sherbrooke St Gilbert’s church hall on a Thursday night from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. We are open to boys and girls from 10 - 14.5 years of age.

Our troop nights at the church are aimed at preparing the Scouts for outdoor activities they can undertake at various locations throughout the year. These camps and expeditions include; attendance at the World International Jamboree, weekends away camping at local Scottish sites and attendance at National Events such as the Highland Adventure and the week long camp at Blair Atholl. In the last year boys from the 159th have been able to experience kayaking, cooking in the wild, rock climbing, 5-a-side soccer, hill walking, gorge walking, light weight camping, crate climbing to name but a few.  These events are not just fun, but also help to develop leadership skills and confidence.

The Scout programme has a badge and rewards system that will ensure all activities receive recognition.

The Troop also assists local charities and has guest speakers in to discuss issues of a local interest.

If your son or daughter is interested in joining then we’d love to hear from them:

Explorer Scouts

Back on dry land after kayaking.

Learning to Scuba Dive

The “No Limits” Explorer Scouts are our Senior Section and are for young people aged from 14.5yrs until their 18th birthday. Explorers have lots of input to their programme and from quite a small base the Unit is now building nicely. However, there is plenty room for more members so we’d love to see more young people along. Recent Explorer activities include kayaking, climbing, hiking, a Cycling Treasure hunt and an introduction to Scuba Diving. We also have camps and other activities during the year. This summer 5 Explorers represented the Unit at the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden 2011 together with some 30,000 young people from all corners of the Globe. Explorers can also be Young Leaders and several members are presently helping out at Beavers and Cubs. There are also lots of opportunities to take part in Regional, National and International events with other Explorer Scouts and take part in even more fun and adventure with others of Explorer age.

Explorers meet at least fortnightly and generally on Wednesdays from 7.30 -9pm with more meetings outwith the main school exam times than when exams are on.  For more info on Explorers please contact the Group Scout Leader,
