Music at Sherbrooke

Music at Sherbrooke centres around our Sunday morning Service at 10.30 am.

The choir under the directorship of John Gormley brings the whole range of western church music (from J S Bach to such modern composers as John Bell) within our reach. We are a very enthusiastic bunch of amateurs including singers from a very young age (RSNO Junior Singers) to some who have been around a while.

The Choir

Within recent years we have sung Choral Evensong with the choir of St. Margaret’s Scottish Episcopal Church and contributed the largest number to the choir that sang in Glasgow Cathedral to celebrate the 450th Anniversary of the Reformation in Scotland.

For special services, such as Carols by Candlelight in Advent or some Services for Holy Week, many friends join us from the RSAMD and nearer to home.  In fact anyone who wants to and loves singing would be made more than welcome. Please come along and join us.

Choral Scholarships at Sherbrooke St. Gilbert's

We fund four scholarships annually for young people to sing with the church choir. The scholarships are open to pupils of secondary school age who want to gain experience singing the full repertoire of church music.

The scholarships attract a modest honorarium and a thorough introduction to ecclesiastical music in the western tradition.

To apply for one of these scholarships which run from September through to the following June (the school year) please contact John Gormley through the church email and he will send out the details and application form.

  Concerts

We are fortunate to have a yearly programme of musical events since our Church Sanctuary is used by many other choirs, orchestras and bands for their rehearsals, concerts or recordings. The groups that have played or rehearsed here include Glasgow Sinfonia, Glasgow Orchestral Society, Govan Salvation Army Band, Scottish National Orchestra, as well as many others.   We also contribute to the Sherbrooke Festival an event which is a celebration of music and art held every year in the Spring at Sherbrooke St. Gilbert’s Parish Church.

Contacting us: John Gormley for musicianship and Janet Lamb for hall hire: Church email.
