Twenty minutes after the fire brigade arrived, J. Cuthbertson of Cuthbertson architects was at the scene with contractors and engineers putting forward plans to save the building. Together with the Minister and congregation they initiated a reconstruction programme which involved almost complete rebuilding of the Victorian church. The structure is largely as the original, although with modern standards and services. Internally, the lost pews have been replaced with chairs, the communion table is modular and the pulpit is movable to allow greater flexibility of use.

However the most striking change is the entire scheme of new stained glass windows. Two stained glass artists, Susan Bradbury and Paul Lucky had been involved in the centenary conservation works and they were approached anew with the ideas of researching redundant windows for possible re-use. As the search proceeded it became apparent that the windows available, of disparate shape, size and subject matter would have no direct relevance to Sherbrooke St. Gilbert’s Church, nor its locality or indeed to each other. It was soon realised that after a great deal of hard work the results might be a series of tired saints jammed tightly against the mullions with lots of empty space above and below. Gradually the idea grew of a new glazing scheme with no saints in sight; instead stories of Creation and Re-Creation, Building and Rebuilding, with underlying themes of Faith and Light.
