Stained Glass

The stained glass windows are created by Susan Bradbury and Paul Lucky,
Stained Glass Partnership, Kilmaurs, Ayrshire.

They are newly designed after the Fire in 1994 devastated the Church and the original windows. During the reconstruction, the idea gradually grew of a new glazing scheme representing the stories of Creation and Re-Creation, Building and Rebuilding, with underlying themes of Faith and Light.

The windows are made in the traditional lead glazing technique using handmade glass manufactured in Britain France, Germany and Poland and incorporating lenses and prisms for added effect. Some of the colours were specially made for this project including French glass blown in two layers, a thin blue overlying a deep pink. This is one of many glasses which are etched with hydrofluoric acid to give subtle variations in texture and hue, in this case varying from pink through every shade of mauve to rich blue. The windows were cartooned at full-size, acid etched, cut, lead glazed and subsequently installed by a team of eight craftsmen and women over a period of approximately a year. The overall area of stained glass is 80 square metres.
