Right before the spring festival, we managed to hold a meeting with less members but still full of fun.

Many members left the city heading to their hometown already, many was busy on packing for a long journey. While our 3 prepared speakers kept their commitments. Reda persuaded us make people action by thinking their own interest, this powerful speech won him the best prepared speaker of the meeting. Our new but active member Jimmy told us his plan of the spring festival holiday and shared us the process of planning. The third speaker was our president Emily, she told us her own experience with beggars in the street and revealed a dream of her that help the unlucky person to improve their ability.

We also enjoyed a challenging table topic session. Thanks for the perfect preparation of the table topic master Parkman and all the 10 attendents, we all answered questions related to spring festival. Our new member Allen, who came from a club in Beijing, won the best table topic speaker award by describing the folk story of the mystery monster "year".

We were short of hands to take roles, so most members took more than one role to make the meeting going. However, we had enough courage and enthusiasm to fullfill the requirement of a successful meeting.

Happy Chinese new year, fellow Toastmasters!

Timer Jenny and Ah counter Brook were both the first time to take their roles, but they both did a great job! As Grammarian,I gave a fashion word for the the night 4/7 (means all time), for it‘s one of the most popular words used by the youth of American nowadays, and many fellow members used it very good!

The prepared speakers this night were 2 gentleman, they both delivered their Ice Breaker. Jimmy told us about his hard way of his smoking quit, Sean talked about the importance of the new energy nowadays. So surprised that they acted just as the experienced members, good vocal variety and body language!

Our fellow member June Higiwara, another elegant lady, from USA, gave us some special evaluation. She told us some differences from the TM club of USA and

  • After the table topic master Jasmin revealed the theme "change" and asked for valenteers, many hands raised up, like trees in forest.
  • To get an oppotunity of table topic, David changed his seat from an inner one to the first row. This trick worked. He used the 2 minutes with powerful analysis and questioned the audience to think. He won the best table topic speaker.
  • By successfully set up an expection of word "nervous" but said "hungry" instead, Jane made an big laughter in a burst. Her first speech of humorous speaking was so funny that the audience could not stop laugh in the 7 and a half minutes. Furthermore, it was an inspiring speech with clear message. No wonder this outstanding performance let her became the best speaker of the meeting. .
  • When the general evaluator asked all the people which word to describe the whole meeting, they cheered out the word of the evening: classic.

Facts of the meeting

  • It was late from the beginning for 10 minutes. While ended 10 minutes later compares to the schedule. First time timer Jimmy did the job perfectly.
  • Tammy made her 3rd speech well controlled in confidence. "the golden windows" was a story telling speech with good organizationBy mimic the scenes in his boyhood, Sun met the vocal variety requirement in the manual in his 6th speech. Lots of act in the presentation made it an attracting one.

Meeting Minutes for 136th Chapter meeting of SZTM held on Nov. 18

Out of curiosity I arrived at the meeting room of our 136th meeting. What is the meaning of life? Would we be able to have a clue after the meeting?

Toastmaster of the evening Michael LEE initiated the discussion of this topic right in the self introduction session.

Our new member Parkman act as a timer, he is so nice and we are all very cooperative, only GE was overtime(oops, it was me!). Our president Emily take the job of Ah counter, easy for her, as she seldom makes ah. Despite of the fact that she always hates grammar, Apple did the job of grammarian enthusiastically and give a slogan "That's more like it!" , very special.

I would give the most progress award(if there is any) to our table topic master Sun ZHANG, I wouldn't say the topic is easy however there are so many volunteer that Sun has to make very difficult choice.

Our previous area governor David came and gave a development session "Keeping the commitment", he remind us a sometime neglected fact that by joining Toastmaster, we have given our commitment to attend the meeting, to prepare ahead, to help other members, and remember the golden rule, if we want to be treated in a certain way, we need to do the same as well.

The 3 speeches are great: Jessica gave her speech "I have a dream" as enthusiastically as Lincoln or Obama, very popular topic concerning food safety and environment protection. Jasmine brought up a new concept 90/10, requesting us to pay attention on those 10% that we have control and not worry too much about those we can't change. Koby is creative, he shared with us some discovery he had and in the end we couldn't help to say "A-ha!"

Our dear past president, new mommy Hettie evaluated Jessica's speech. And as usual, the best evaluator evaluate the best speech!
And we have another 2 dedicated member Reda and Robert evaluate the rest 2 speeches.

It was a great meeting, and in the end, 2 guests have decided to join and our friend from Beijing decided to transfer his membership!

Couldn't wait to come to our next meeting on Dec. 2, and see what surprises there will be!

Ladies and Gentlemen:

We had another wonderful meeting last night!

Currently China is deeply affected by the financial tsunami. Many companies shut down. May people lose job. This is a difficult time for everybody but our members still showed up with happy smile & positive attitude last night.

TME Judy Zhu lead the meeting smoothly. Eventhough the economic crisis cause big problem to her own life, she still spoke with a big shining smile as usual. And, humorous as well!

In self introduction section, we had big laughters when people announced “I am still alive” one by one. It’s a little sad that some members lose job and many earn less than before. But everyone was optimistic about China’s future.

Table Topic Master Michael Lee did very good preparation for the section. He prepared questions closely related to the theme “Cost Save”. And speakers shared their own experiences as well as opinions regarding this special theme for this special time: Apple said she used to take bus to get somewhere, now she walks to everywhere. What a smart girl!

Four speakers Lily, Laura, Jessica and Robert delivered wonderful speeches for us!

Lily gently introduced last New Member Orientation activity she attended, calling memory of every member who attended that Orientation!

Laura’s ice breaker speech was fluent, vivid and funny. We got to know more about her family, her job and her personal experiences. Ah yes, good news for gentlemen, this lovely young lady is still single!

Jessica shared a very insighful speech with us “Save as you Earn”. Every word was from the bottom of her heart and she touched every body in the room!

Robert introduced an unusual activity with us “Holiday under the water”. The beautiful pictures & video he took under the sea amazed everyone. His speech trigered our desire of exploring the water ourselves too!

IE Tammy, Jasmine, Sun and Sarah all listened to the speakers carefully and provided constructive suggestions for them.

Facilitation team, Ah Counter Parkmen, Timmer our long time no see past past past President Hettie Tu, Grammarian who doesn’t know grammer Koby Sa, all performed well and brought many laughters to us!

In one sentence, the financial crisis heats our economy, but not our spirit. The SZTM family will get through this difficult time, together!

Dear fellow members and friends,

We had a remarkable meeting on 21st Oct, 2008!  Of course, this nice word, remarkable, is from our Grammarian, Judy Zhu.

We had 3 prepared speakers, our Koby Sa, Jasmin Zhai and Robert Luo.

Koby talked about “Exchange Rate”. It was the hottest topic now because of the current global financial crisis. He explained the different role of RMB & US dollar for our government, and let us understood the importance of the Exchange Rate. Nice job!

As a real manager in daily life, Jasmin used a funny story to explain her topic “Manage You,Manager” perfectly. The story was about 2 employee, when their boss asked them gave some information about potato in the market, their performance were completely different. The one took several times come back to the market to get the information his boss wanted, but the other one just use one time to answer all the boss’s questions! It’s really a simple story, but full of philosophy, both benefit for employer and employee! An amazing speech! Best Prepared Speaker!

Continued with the last speech“Web Site Improving Plan”, Robert let us to discuss with him about how to make our ideas actable. Like before, our members and friends shared many good suggestions about this topic. Such as “divide our web site into different parties and let our different member to take responsibility of the different party”, “add an IT officer”, “write stories about ourselves”,ect. Our web site improving was running to the action session! Well done, Robert!

Our individual evaluators, Sun Zhang, Emily Yang (Best Evaluator) and Jane Lee gave related speakers kind feedback and nice suggestions.  “Koby, your speeches are always excellent, but maybe you can try to follow our manual. (I think it is better for you to win in our contest later.)”  That was my suggestion for Koby. Emily praised Jasmin’s good job, and suggested her to have more gestures… Well done, evaluators!

Our Tammy was first as TME.  Nice Job!  She prepared well and gave our roles nice introduction. Also led the meeting smoothly and well. Our elegant Sara was as GE. She showed her kind feedback and good suggestions to all speakers.  I have learnt more from her about running club meeting well.  Thank you, my mentor, Sarah!

Our Grammarian Judy, Timer Laura and Ah-Counter Eric did well. They kept on their duty and led the meeting smoothly and very well.

At the end, I need to point out my double mistakes as VPE. 1. I did not let our Timer Laura know her duty well. Sorry, Laura.  2. I did not arrange Robert’s speech (it is not Table Topic.) well in our agenda. It made us confused, especially for Sarah.  Sorry, everyone.  I knew my mistakes. But Toastmasters is the right place to make mistakes.  Later, I am sure I will improve them and present coming remarkable meetings for all of you as VPE! : )

Thank you very much for joining and enjoying in our meeting.

Have a happy life!

Sincerely,

Sun Zhang and Tammy Tan

Our evaluator team last night was the most powerful team in our history! In the leadin of our past president Jane Lee,firstly, our president Emily Yang and the president of Ship toastmaster club Sarah He,evaluated our speakers’ speech. They not only prised the good points and advantages of our speakers, but also gave some advices.

Our Timer Michael,Ah counter Sarah, and Grammarian Laura also did a very good job! Michael controlled our meeting time exactly,Sarah gave us a special role description and Laura really gave us a big surprise! As a English teacher, she was really professional to play her LE’s role. She gave us the word Enjoiyable and picked up many good sentences in our meeting, such as “Keep the dream in yr mind”..

At last,GE Jane evaluated all the details of the meeting, with her analyse and suggestion, each of us could make more progress!

Dear members and friends,

We had a brilliant meeting on Oct 7th!

For the Table Topic session, Emily chose a brilliant table topic: Who should pay for the bill? She prepared 1-4 questions for gentlemen and A-E questions for ladies.  That is a nice idea.   Of course, we need the creative thought!  Our members and friends are eager to join in this discussion.  So we have 8 speakers in this session, such as Koby, Jennifer, Michael, Apple, William, Jessica, Judy and me.  Wonderful memory for us!  Thank you, Emily!

For the Development session, our Sarah shared how to get 10 goals for our distinguished club.  Officers and members, we need to follow Sarah’s instructions to be distinguished club again!  Come on!  Thank you, Sarah!

For the Prepared Speech session, we have two prepared speakers Jessica and Tammy in the same project 2.  Also they did very well.  Do you know how to pass a ball?  That is Jessica’s speech.  When we just thought about pass a ball in sport, she gave us a surprise and talked about training. What is training? ...  Training make them think…  I am still thinking about it.  Thank Jessica for bringing us to think!  Do you love Tammy’s speech” Poor and Rich”?  Sure, we loved it. From the question “Do you think you are rich? “, Tammy started her speech.  She led us to explore the meaning of life from her thought and experience.  She shared her happiness and rich life with us and led us to think more… Well done, Jessica and Tammy.

For the Evaluation session, our Michael and Koby gave kind and friendly feedback and suggestion to our prepared speakers.  Thank you, Michael and Koby!

We had a fantastic meeting last meeting! Well done!

Last meeting, we had 4 prepared speakers, Warren, Judy, Sarah and Robert. Congratulations! They delivered their successful speeches and shared their colorful stories and experience with us.

Warren started his adventure in SZTM. Maybe he has found a new land in life. From his speech, we learn that who is Warren, his work and reason for joining in SZTM. Great speech! We can not forget Warren now!

Judy showed two interesting stories in her speech. One story was one pity girl cheated by one bad boy. She had run for 1 hour because of boy’s lie.  What a bad Boy! The other story happened in 1st April.  Be careful on 1st April and that is a terrible day. Also, try to control making a fool of someone.  Sometimes, it is dangerous.  Wow, nice lady, nice speech!

Sarah gave 3 very funny and humorous stories to support her speech. Especially, mother forgot her baby. It is terrible! Make life simple, make life better. So try to have good sleeping, do not make many things together and …These are her useful advice for us.  My mentor, great speech!

Robert did very well in his speech as before. I appreciate him, because he always has wonderful speech. Do you know 3G? Robert let us know much information and knowledge about 3G. Also he survived when he represented China Mobile for 3G policy to face customers’ inquiries. So competent!

All the individual evaluators Apple, Rocky, Reda and Thomas were very kind and professional. They offered great feedbacks to the speakers.

Michael, Lily and Apple had discovered their new roles in SZTM as TME, TTM and evaluator. Well done! Congratulations! Michael handled meeting well and smoothly with his smile and humor. Lily gave us a good table topic and attracted many guy’s interests. Apple gave a nice evaluation speech for warren.

The Ah Counter Tammy, Grammarian Jasmine and Timer Jason (ARK) worked very hard last night. And they controlled the meeting very well.

For GE Emily, there is nothing but good as Michael said! She gave us good report and kind suggestions!

For me, I wrote the minute for meeting and arranged a good meeting. I am very proud of all members and guests! I am improving too.

In the end, we had a great meeting last meeting! SZTM is right way to grow up and have funs! Do you agree with me? : )

Best Evaluator: Thomas Tom

It seems that the location now is really inconvenient for someone. So our subject last night was whether we need to change our location, increase our meeting numbers, and if like that the increased member fee caused by the mentioned changes was acceptable or not? These questions were related to each member and guest,so Emily invited all the person expressed their opinions one by one. Some person would like to change the location because of the traffic problem, there still someone prefered the place now,for here was not only the root of our club, but also full of memories…Of course we couldn’t satisfy everyone. It’s really a serious thing for our club,so maybe we had to get the final division by vote next meeting…

Last meeting we got our club’s goal this year, and this time we reviewed the last year’s brilliant achievements with Robert, thanks to Jane,Emily,Sarah,Judy,Robert and each member, our club achieved almost all the 10 goals! Well done!”You progress, our club progress!”The vivid charts, the humourous sentences, and the “Robert brand” smiles,so excellent speech! And of course he was the best prepared speaker this night!

Koby,a “lazy” gentleman,a little be lazy to do body exercises, for he was prefer to thinking. The differences between the different cultures, the mysteries of the natural priciples, etc.Such as Mr. Dai (die),Miss Hu (who)? Would u puzzled? Why each person has 2 eyes,2 ears,2 hands, but just has 1 nose,1 mouse? Did these demanded us see more, hear more, cooperate more, and speak less?...Interesting!Maybe gentleman always like to think about the philosophy questions.

Jason took us back to the Sichuan earthquake disarster two months ago, which shaked all around the world. At the very moment the most urgent thing was saving the lives! Although the time passed,we still need to seize today, begin now, give our hands!

There’s a most experienced toastmaster I’ve ever seen, with huge power and personal attractive,as a member of toastmaster for 25 years, came from Taiwan, being the general evaluator last night—Thomas Chen! He showed us what’s the soul of the toastmaster! Firstly, his professional evaluator team,Thomas Tom,Jane and Reda evaluated the speakersfor Robert,if he could communicate more with the audiences that sat on the other side of the room,it would be a perfect speech! For Koby, advised he to make a conclusion at the end of his speech. And for Jason, suggested him with more gestures. And then, our general evaluator also evaluated each section this night.According to his experiences,he suggested several points, such as the introduction section,we could just let guests introduce themselves, and then the members could get our “target” to take care of them;the table topic section we needn’t let all of us to express our opinions, etc. From him not only we new members but also our experienced one could benefit a lot!

Last night’s meeting is really a very good lesson for me,what about u?
