Digital Poetry

Collaboration with the Media Specialist, Technology Integrator, and First Grade Teacher

Overview

This unit will take approximately three weeks.  This project has been designed as a collaborative project between the Media Specialist, Technology Integrator, and the First Grade classroom teacher.  Most of the work will be done in the classroom but the media center and computer lab will also play an important role in the project.   This project utilizes resources such as:  poetry books, online poetry websites, video interviews, United Streaming, powerpoint, Word, digital cameras, images & clipart, music, storyboards, and microphones.

Since first graders are naturally curious, Violet Harada's following quote seems to fit in perfectly for this topic.  "Inquiry-driven instruction takes advantage of children's natural curiosity.  It builds on their innate instincts towards discovery and observation."  (11)

The objective of this unit is to introduce students to the various types of poetry, the use of different technology tools, the terminology of the Super 3 and scaffold them as they work through the process.  This unit also promotes reading for pleasure.

This collaborative project will address the following information literacy standards:

ILS 1: accesses information efficiently and effectively.

ILS 3:  uses information accurately and creatively.

ILS 5:  appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information.

ILS 9:  participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information (shares and collaborates).

Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

6  Technology Operations and Concepts:

Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.

Based on the age of the students, this unit will use mostly controlled inquiry and proceed to guided inquiry as they finish up their product.  Students will also use the Super 3 model which has been adapted to meet the needs of younger learners.

Students will be encouraged to find poetry resources on their own, as well as using the media center to locate the section that contains the poetry books.
