Version I

Mr. X’s Vacation Adventure

A True Story

Mr. X (who is 43) and his family had to fly home from Denver, Colorado on Sunday morning leaving at 6:15 a.m. (MST). His family consists of his wife Susan who is 40, their son Richard who is 12, and their son Francis who is 9.  They were flying from Denver to Washington, D.C., and then from D.C. to Rochester NY.  For check-in and security reasons they had to arrive at the airport two hours prior to take-off.  While they boarded the Denver to D.C. flight on time, it took off 50 minutes late.  They were supposed to have arrived in D.C. at 11: 10 a.m. (EST).

1)      What is the average age of the “X” family?

2)      What time did they arrive in D.C.?

Upon arriving in D.C. they were informed by one source that their flight to Rochester had been cancelled.  Mr. X called United Airlines “hotline” while his wife got into the United Airline travel line.  The sons sat together in the waiting area.  Mr. X was informed over the phone that the flight was not cancelled and actually on time. Mrs. X was also informed by the counter person that the flight was on time, and not cancelled.  They were directed to wait in the gate C22 area. After a time they were told to go to gate A1.  They took a shuttle bus to that gate.  They were then instructed to go to gate C28; they took a shuttle to that gate.  After a short time they were then told to once again go to gate A1.  After 30 more minutes they were instructed to go to gate C22, which was the original gate they were at.  Within 5 minutes of arriving back at gate C22 they were again instructed to go to gate A1.  Each time they traveled from an “A” gate to a “C” gate they rode the shuttle approximately 6 ½ minutes.

3)      How much time did each shuttle trip take and how many shuttle

trips were there between “A” and “C” gates?

4)      Using fractions, how much time was spent riding shuttles?  Explain how you got your answer.

At gate A1 they awaited their flight. At 1:40 p.m. they were told that their 2:15 p.m. flight would be delayed until 3:30 p.m.  At  2:30 they were told the flight would leave at 4 p.m., then they were informed the flight would be at 4:30 p.m., and finally at about 4 p.m. they were informed the flight to Rochester from D.C. was cancelled.  By this time they had spoken with several United Airline employees:  A woman at gate C22; a man on the phone; a woman at gate C28; a woman at gate A1; and a man at gate A1.  They eventually were told that would not be able to fly out of Washington until Wednesday or Thursday.  By this time they had grouped up with a 32 year old man named John and a 48-year-old woman named Mary Liz.

5)      If the flight from D.C. to Rochester NY was to have departed at 2:15 p.m., how

Much time was there from then until the time they found out the flight was actually cancelled?  Explain how you arrived at your answer.

6)      Write the ratio of men to women mentioned in paragraph 3 as a fraction; then make 2 equivalent ratios.  Explain your process.

The group decided to rent a car.  They called the following rental car businesses:  Budget, Enterprise, Avis, Thrifty, and Hertz.  Only Hertz could meet their groups’ rental car requirements.  They left the airport on the Hertz shuttle bus at 4:30.  The trip to Hertz took 10 minutes, and they waited in line for 1 hour.  Once they got to the rental counter it took another 15 minutes to complete the paperwork. At the counter they rented a Grand Marquis for a basic rental fee of $175.  They received a 20% discount on that cost.  Then added $36.12 for insurance.  That new total had to be taxed 6%.   It was another ½ hour before they actually could begin to drive.  All of them piled into the car (2 males and 1 female in front and the 2children and their mother in back) and proceeded to drive home.

       7) Calculate amount of discount on the basic rental fee, then the new basic cost.

       8)  Calculate tax on the rental fee and insurance, and then calculate total cost.

The drive would normally take approximately 6 ½ hours. However, due to poor weather conditions they left Washington D.C. at 6:15 p.m. and did not arrive in Rochester until 5 a.m. the following morning.  Then Mr. X and his wife had to make some work oriented phone calls, as they were utterly exhausted.  Mr. X made 1 and his wife made 2.  They then had to drive to their home, which was another 80 miles. The main portion of the drive from D.C. to their home in Upstate N.Y. took 12 hours.  The total driving trip was 476 miles.  John drove for 25% of the trip; Mary Liz drove for 6% of the trip; Mrs. X drove for 18%; Mr. X drove the rest of the distance.  From 3.a.m. Sunday morning in Denver (MST) to 8 a.m. Monday morning (EST) Mr. X only slept for 1.5 hours.  The X family arrived at their home at 8 a.m. Monday morning and immediately went to sleep!

9)      Calculate the % that Mr. X drove home and use that number to calculate

How many miles (out of 476) he drove.  (Round to nearest mile).  Explain

what you did to arrive at your answer.

10)  If Mr. X drove the final 80 miles at a rate of 45 mph, how long did it take him

to arrive at his destination. ( Use the formula Time = Distance/Rate and round to nearest minute).
