 Standard 2: Teaching and Learning

2.3 Information Literacy Curriculum

  Reflection-
I did two I-Searches in this program.   One of them I did as if I was a student on the topic of personal finance and relationships.  I did not include this I-Search as part of my portfolio because it was personal in nature; however, I will say that it was one of the most useful and interesting projects I did in this program.  My second I-Search, in which the final product is included above, was done on the topic of inquiry.  I created a presentation that I plan to share with my faculty on this topic. I think that getting the word out to the teachers and administration at my school about the importance of inquiry in research is so important.

 Reflection-
The Reading and Literacy Project was one of the first projects I completed in this program.  It was a great opportunity for me to work with a couple of my fellow students in the program and really look at literacy.  It was so interesting for me as a media specialist and former English teacher to look at ways to promote reading and literacy as a new media specialist.  The plan and all of the materials we created for this project I implemented with my Battle of the Books Program at CMS.

Order Project

4.1 Managing Information Resources: Selecting, Organizing, Using

4.2 Managing Program Resources: Human, Financial, Physical

  Reflection-
As a first year media specialist, one of the first jobs I was required to do (without training) was to create an order.  I was so pleased when I took the collection development class to see that this was a major project that we were to complete.  I needed the help in understanding that there is a lot more to creating orders than just spending money and filling your media center with books.  I found that this project allowed me to apply all the new ideas that my partner and I learned about collection development to an actual order.  I would say that this was one of my favorite classes of the program.

 Program Development and Evaluation Plan

4.3 Comprehensive and Collaborative Strategic Planning and Assessment

 Reflection-
Every media specialist should create a new program development and evaluation plan when they first begin their job.  This was such a valuable experience for me as a new media specialist.  This project made me consider all aspects of how and why my program will run.  It helped me to consider my school's mission and how that mission relates to my media program.  In this project, I had the opportunity to look at the needs of my patrons, community, curriculum and school and balance those needs in order to create a program to best serve all parties.  Each year I will revisit my plan and make any necessary changes.

 Curriculum Map

AASL Standards Alignment

Standard 2: Teaching & Learning

2.1 Knowledge of Learners and Learning

2.2 Effective and Knowledgeable Teacher

2.3 Information Literacy Curriculum

 Standard 3: Collaboration & Leadership

3.2 Instructional Partner

 Reflection-
Curriculum maps are so important for media specialist and teachers in their collaboration because it allows for the involved parties to look at how they can work together in order to meet the needs of the students while incorporating standards in the curriculum area as well as the information literacy standards.  This project allowed my group and me to look at how we could take a unit a teacher plans to teach and "beef it up" to address the information literacy and technology standards that we as media specialists and them as teachers need to help our students with to prepare them to be learners in the world we live in today.

Reflection--

The selection policy assignment was very useful and essential for me as a new media specialist to look at how my media committee and I to select the materials for our media center.  Once again, I had no idea the responsibility and work that goes in to choosing the books and materials for our media center.  It is such an important job for so many reasons and without this document one may go about selection in a way that is not systematic and thus not the most beneficial for the school media program.

  Internship

Standard 2: Teaching & Learning

2.1 Knowledge of Learners and Learning

2.2 Effective and Knowledgeable Teacher

 Standard 3:  Collaboration and Leadership

3.1  Connection with the Library Community

 Reflection-

The Internship was a great opportunity for me to reflect on what I have been doing for a year and a half here in my media center.  I have never really thought about all of the things I do on a daily basis and how those are related to what I have learned in this program.  It was an amazing experience to do all of this reflection.  I enjoyed the chance to spend time in other media centers and look at the practices of those media specialist.  My mentor and I have been in constant contact over the past year and a half discussing how and why I should make the decisions I make as well as day to day how to type questions.  I think that the Internship is an essential part of learning to be a media specialist.

GACE Assessment

Taken:  August 23, 2008

Tests:    GACE 1 & 2 Media Specialists Assessments

 Results:  Passed both sections

 Reflection--
I wasn't sure what to expect when I went to take the GACE becuause I had been doing this job for quite a while and at the same time I had been working through the certification program.  I did well on the test and felt fully prepared once I began the test.
