Short Bio

A B M Shawkat Ali is the Senior Lecturer of the School of Information and Communication Technology at CQUniversuty, Australia. Prior to Joining at CQUniversity, Ali was an Assistant Professor at Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Islamic University, Bangladesh and Lecturer at School of Computing & Information Technology, Monash University, Australia.

Ali obtained Master degree and MPhil from the University of Rajshahi and PhD from Monash University with a thesis on Automated Support Vector Learning Algorithms. Most of his thesis works are on Computational Intelligence, Data Mining with the support of International Post Graduate Scholarship. In 2004, he received Monash Publication Award based on his research publications.

His main research interest is in Machine Learning, in particular, statistical learning theory, rule based learning, their applications in Business, Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. He has published more than 80 scientific articles in this area. His first journal paper from the PhD thesis has received more than 60 citations. He is the principle author of the Data Mining textbook titled ‘Data Mining: Methods and Techniques’ published by Thomson. This book is being used as a text in more than 16 universities around the Globe including 6 universities in Australia. He has been awarded AUD$ 2,58,000 in competitive grants, including one merit grant. He is the editor-in-chief of one engineering journal published from Canada. He is a regular member of the program committees of premier conferences in the areas of machine learning, data mining, bioinformatics, telecommunications and sensor networking. He is a regular reviewer of the leading Journals from IEEE and Elsevier. He is passionate about helping students and young researchers to get a good start in their careers. Currently he is supervising 5 PhD and 1 Master’s students. He has also received Excellence in Supervision Award from CQUniversity in 2007.
