RESEARCH INTERESTS
I am a social scientist trained in health policy interested in the politics of health policy, the roles of the media and the public's opinions in health policy, and ethical issues in health policy and public health.
My dissertation (completed in 2008) was entitled "The Impact of News Media Frames of Type 2 Diabetes on the Public's Health Policy Opinions." My dissertation committee consisted of Paula Lantz (chair), Scott Greer, Peter Ubel, Renee Anspach, and Nicholas Valentino. In my dissertation I assessed the health policy implications of media coverage of type 2 diabetes, particularly its racial associations and causal narratives. I relied on primary data from both quantitative news media content analysis and an Internet survey-based experiment. The abstract from my dissertation is available here, and abstracts from publications resulting from this work are available here.
As a RWJF Health & Society scholar, I remain interested in the roles of the media in health policy and population health. I am currently engaged in research on the intersections of the news media, politics, and American public opinion on a variety of topics, including childhood obesity, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, health inequalities, and the social determinants of health. See below for more detail about each of these ongoing projects.
I have also conducted research on direct-to-consumer marketing of genetic tests, mental health services research, and other ethical issues in health policy and public health.
