Members and units who avidly keep abreast of and help educate and inform members and the public about the space program, are recognized with this award. This is awarded once, annually. USS OHIO NCC-75007-For its continual endeavors to educate and stay abreast of the of space exploration and astronomy issues. During the past year this valiant crew regular missions to a local observatory to observe and scan space and support the local astronomy club. You are also being cited for your continual endeavors of educating the crew about your discoveries. Depending on the success of the Heimdal's Annual Charity Auction & other fundraisers, the chapter offers a scholarship to a local middle school or high school student annually ... including home schooled students ...to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL for a week. The cost to the Heimdal, including registration, a flight suit & $300 in travel funds is roughly $1350. The Heimdal has been financially able to offer this scholarship in 2009, 2010 & this year - 2011.The scholarship is publicized within the local schools. Students are asked to write essays ... 500 words or less on why they want to go to Space Camp. Essays are read by the Heimdal's Space Camp Committee & a winner is chosen.A local TV talk show features the winning student annually & the scholarship is advertised in the Heimdal's newsletter.Because of the community & school awareness of the scholarship, the Heimdal is bringing attention to today's space program & promoting a scholarship that may interest one of our recipients in becoming involved in the space program as a career.This is a tremendous educational opportunity for the student who is recipient of the scholarship.This Heimdal program is a positive reflection on the Heimdal & Starfleet & adds to our credibility within the community. |
