Cosplay

descrbies the performing-art behaviour of acting like a particular character with matching costume, accessories, and behaviours. Cosplay is something of it's own subculture, centered on dressing up as characters from various manga, anime, video games, movies, and the life. Cosplay ideas can come from anything in the real or fantasy world that is unique, dramatic, and has a strong effect (such as Jack Skellington or Captain Jack Sparrow from movies).

Where It Happens

Cosplay most often occurs in places where large groups of fans congregate, such as anime conventions or sci-fi conventions. Spontaneous cosplay can occur, in which a fan arbitrarily decides to dress as a character for a day. Sometimes spontaneous cosplay is not recognized by normal people, if the character does not have too crazy of an outfit.

Anime Conventions

Most cosplay probably happens at anime conventions, and at most conventions nearly a fourth of all visitors do some sort of cosplay. Anime is often one of the most cosplayed things, also. Some of the biggest conventions attract tens of thousands of anime fans from around the world, which also includes thousands of cosplayers (people who cosplay). Anime conventions aren't limited to just anime costumes, though, as cosplayers frequently dress like movie or video game characters.

Sci-Fi Conventions

Science Fiction fans also enjoy cosplay a lot. At a Sci-Fi convention you may see all sorts of unique characters, ranging from Star Wars Wookies to guys wearing a Star Trek shirt (just the uniform top).
