Foreign Languages Course Syllabus

6th Grade  Spanish

Textbook:   Entre Amigos I.  This book will only be used in the classroom as a class set and will not be issued  
                   to students.

 

Materials required: 

 

The student will need:

  • A one inch three ring binder.  This binder is for Spanish class ONLY.  Please do not put any other work in it.
  • Notebook paper to be placed inside the binder.
  • Five packs of 3x5” unlined notecards to make flashcards throughout the year.
  • An English/Spanish dictionary is recommended.  This can be purchased from the student store at RTMS.
  • Students will also need scissors, glue, markers, colored pencils, and or crayons for use throughout the year.

Wish list items for the classroom:  Kleenex, hand sanitizer, colored copy paper, dry erase markers, and pencils.

 

Course Description:  This class is designed for the student who is interested in learning how to read, write, speak and understand the Spanish language.  An overview of the history and culture of Spanish speaking countries will also be provided.

 

Sample of accomplishments by the end of the 6th grade:

  • Describe favorite foods
  • Express likes and dislikes
  • Give weather and calendar information
  • Write a short paragraph in Spanish
  • Describe the rooms of the house
  • Describe animals and pets

 

Teaching Strategies:  Teaching strategies include, but are not limited to:  group choral repetition, singing, responding in the target language to a visual stimulus, guided mini dialogues, word puzzles, role playing, listening to taped target language conversations for comprehension, limited research on cultural and geographical topics, poster projects with class presentations, educational games, reading books, and many more.

 

Grade Determination:  Fulton County Policy states:  A 100-90, B 89-80, C 79-70, F anything below 70.

 

Provision for improving grades (Recovery): From the Fulton county Board policy on Grading and Reporting

  1. “Opportunities designed to allow a student to recover from a low (73 or lower) or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements, including attendance.
  2. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades.”

 

Grading Scheme:  Students will receive grades for exams, quizzes, oral expression, homework, and projects (which may include skits, dialogues, written stories or paragraphs, and art).

     40% Oral and Written tests

     30% Oral and Written quizzes

     20% Projects

     10% Homework and class participation

There will be a daily warm-up assignment that will be collected weekly for a class participation grade.

Homework Policy:  Homework is typically assigned on Monday through Thursday nights to extend or to reinforce class work and checked for completion, and reviewed with the students.  Homework assignments should not take more than 15 minutes to complete.

Make-up Work Policy:  Students are responsible for material covered in class during their absence.  Fulton County policy specifies that a student will have as many days to make up work as s/he was absent (absent 1 day, 1 day to make up work; absent 2 days, 2 days to make up work). Students absent during a test day will make up the test on their first day back (during the class period) unless they have a parent note requesting that the student be given one extra day. Students absent the day prior to the test will have to take the test upon their return to class unless they have a parent note requesting that student be given one extra day. 

 

Parental Notification:  Parents are to be notified via Parent Connect of all student grades.  All failing grades on major assignments are to be sent home for parent signature. 

 

Weekly Scheduled Help Sessions:  Extra assistance is available on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 7:45 am - 8:15 am.  I will also be available at different times by appointment.  Please let me know if you need to come in for a help session and I will write you a pass to come in for help. 

 

Student Conduct:  Students are expected to abide by the rules of conduct presented in the Student Handbook.  In addition, the student is expected to:

1)  Be Respectful of yourself, others, their ideas and their property.

2)  Be on Time, come prepared and strive for academic excellence.

3)  Follow Directions the first time they are given.

4)  Take Full Responsibility for your actions.

5)  Always tell the truth.

    6)  Follow the RTMS General Rules of Conduct.

   Cell phones need to be turned off and kept in the student’s locker.

Gum is not permitted in my classroom.  Electronics are also not permitted.

 

Infraction of rules will result in warning, parent notification, silent lunch, private detention, counselor referral, or administration referral.  Communication initiated by both parents and teachers is essential to students’ academic and behavioral success.  Methods of communication include telephone conferences, test papers, e-mail, and especially the agenda.
