8th Grade Homework Schedule

Homework for the week of 6/1/09-6/5/09:
 
Monday, 6/1/09:
1) Read 30 Minutes.
2) Complete Reading Log (pick any two of the seven strategies strong readers use: connect, question, infer, predict, summarize, visualize, evaluate). 
3) Re-take the STAR Reading Test if you don't feel you did your best. 
4) Continue memorizing lines for drama project.
5) Make sure you have your persuasive packet and final project assignment sheets every day this week. 
 
Tuesday, 6/2/09:
1) Read 30 minutes.
2) Make sure all "action step" pictures/evidence are assembled for tomorrow.
3) Begin work on final draft revisions.
4) Period 2: Final Revision of script due tomorrow. Period 4: Shakespeare memorization checkpoint tomorrow. 
 
Wednesday, 6/3/09:
1) Read 30 minutes--make sure you have finished your literature circles book and know it cover to cover! 
2) Complete persuasive essay final draft.
3) Be prepared for AR Test on Literature Circles Book.  Bring your literature circles book tomorrow and Friday.   
 
Thursday 6/4/09 and Friday 6/5/09:
1) In your persuasive packet: Complete questions 1-8 on packet page 4 and packet pages 6 & 7.
2) Complete Reading Log
3) Have new AR book for the last weeks of the year.  
4) Practice for your drama project.

Monday, 5/25/09:
1) (No School Today--but work on your persuasive action step and your paper, and be sure to read for at least thirty minutes!)
 
Tuesday, 5/26/09:
1) Read for at least 30 minutes.
2) Use persuasive packet page 2 and complete an analysis of the "Electronic Devices" sample essay included in your packet. 
3) Work on your persuasive paper rough draft!  Use packet pages and persuasive essay guide to help with your writing.    
 
Wednesday, 5/27/09:
1) Read for at least 30 minutes.
2) Continue researching your topic and collecting sources for your bibliography.
3) COMPLETE persuasive essay rough draft. 
 
Thursday, 5/28/09:
1) Complete bibliography (Minimum of 10 sources, at least two of which must be books).  
2) Continue work on memorization for drama project: Period 2 skit final drafts due tomorrow; Period 4, Shakespeare selections must be completely memorized by tomorrow.
3) Read for at least 30 minutes.     
 
Friday, 5/29/09:
1) Read for at least 30 minutes/day.
2) Practice presentations.
3) Complete action step for your persuasive project.

Monday, 5/18/09:
1) Ensure that all of last week's homework is complete (check schedule below).
2) Read for at least 30 minutes and complete reading log.
3) Work on your drama and website projects.
 
Tuesday, 5/19/09:
1) Read the counter-argument to Gore's text from Investor's Business Daily (page 122) and complete a three-column chart on what you read.  In the first column, identify any sentences or phrases that contradict Gore's text (minimum of 3).  In the second column, explain the significance of the phrase you chose, and in the third column, predict how Gore might respond based on your reading. 
2) Read for at least 30 minutes.
3) Work on your projects and check the class calendar for upcoming due dates.
 
Wednesday, 5/20/09:
1) Complete the essay brainstorming exercise on persuasive packet page 34.  
2) Read for at least 30 minutes. (Book talks tomorrow)
3) Work on your projects.
 
Thursday, 5/21/09:
1) Take these quizzes online to review sentence fragments and run-on sentences.  Be sure to read the explanations for the correct answers so that you fully understand the corrections for any missed questions:

3) Read 30 minutes and complete reading log.
4) Work on projects.

Friday, 5/22/09:
1) Work on your persuasive projects.  Be sure to come prepared with your google ID next week. 
2) Consider completing your action step for your persuasive project this weekend: what will you do to address this problem yourself? 
3) Read at least 30 minutes per day.

2) Complete packet pages 32 & 33, Brainstorming for your topic. 
3) Continue work on both of your projects.  Discuss how you will divide up the work and ensure all is complete on time with your team members.

3) Read packet page 26 (example) and complete packet page 27 for your own topic.  Remember, a counter-argument is an argument against your own position.  For example, if one reason you think PE should be taught in all schools is "it will give students time to run and stay fit during school," a counter-argument might be "this will take away time from important academic subjects."  A counter-counter argument (CCA) is an argument against the counter-argument.  For example, a counter-counter argument in this case might be "physical health deserves to be considered just as important as any academic subject because without a healthy body, a healthy mind can't be put to use."

Friday, 5/15/09 (Full Day Schedule)
1) Read for 30 minutes/day over the weekend.
2) Work on your final projects.  Make sure you are researching and memorizing!  Check the class calendar for important due dates. 
3) Re-read Al Gore's "A Generational Challenge to Repower America" and the Persausive (Rhetorical) devices excerpt in your workbook.  Create a two-column chart.  In the left column, identify three passages from Gore's essay that attempt to persuade the reader.  In the right column, identify the persuasive device being used (ethos/appeal to ethics, logos/appeal to reason, pathos/appeal to emotion, bandwagon appeal, etc.).  Also explain the effect that each sentence has on the reader.

2) Complete figurative review questions 1-5 from Review packet page 5: In your R/W notebook, rewrite each of the items below in literal language: 1) They were head over heels in love. 2) I'll start on my research paper as soon as my teacher gives me the green light.  3) Take everything he says with a grain of salt.  4) I wish you didn't always make a mountain out of a molehill.  5) I passed the test with flying colors.  
 
Tuesday, 5/5/09:
1) Read 30 minutes
2) Read the full version of "A Generational Challenge to Repower America" (102-108) in your workbook; complete a T-Chart analyzing at least 5 significant sentences (left column: sentence right column: explanation of significance).  Also answer the following questions:  In what ways are these sources credible?  Where do you detect a hidden agenda or bias? 
3) Begin planning your culminating task. 
 
Wednesday, 5/6/09:
1) Read 30 minutes.
2) Re-read the introduction to "A Generational Challenge to Repower America" and answer the following questions in your R/W notebook: 1) How does Gore create a powerful introduction? 2) How is the introduction structured?  3) What words or phrases make it persuasive?  4) What have you learned about how to write a well-defined thesis and introduction? 
3) Continue project and essay planning.
 
Thursday, 5/7/09:
1) Read 30 minutes and complete reading log.
2) Complete literature circles work.
3) Complete introduction shaping sheet (packet pages 30-31)
4) Complete pages 106 & 107 on the Project-Based Learning Form 
 
Friday, 5/8/09
1) Read for 30 minutes/day over the weekend.
2) Work on culminating project and persuasive essay.
3) Complete CST Review study assignment given in class: Review vocabulary 15 minutes per day.
4) Visit www.storyofstuff.org and view the video.  Write a complete paragraph answering this question: What is this video trying to convince you of?  What persuasive strategies does the film clip use?  List at least three.  Take notes while you watch to make this easier.    
5) Period 4: Visit the "Hamlet Background Page" page in the "Links" section and read it in its entirety.

2) Complete workbook p. 89--your goals for the rest of the year.

4) Complete analysis questions on Al Gore's "A Generational Challenge to Repower America" (109): 1) In a short paragraph, what is the text about?  Next, create a T-Chart in your Reader's/Writer's Notebook.  Title the left side "does".  Title the right side "says."  In the "Does" column, for each paragraph, write what the paragraph does--what is its purpose, persuasively?  In the right column, summarize what each purpose says--what is the point?  Complete for all paragraphs.

2) Answer the following questions on the visual text in your workbook, "New Crush-Proof Box" (workbook page 96): 1) What is it about? 2) Why is the design important?  3) What images in this visual text most effectively communicate the image maker's argument?
 
Thursday, 4/23/09:
1) Read 30 minutes
2) Complete definitions for Persuasive Unit vocabulary
3) Complete reading log
4) Make sure your literature circles work is complete 
5) Bring your parents to parent conferences   
 
Friday, 4/24/09:
1) Read 30 minutes/day over the weekend
2) Identify three national or global crises you might want to use for your final research presentation / research paper.  On three 3 x 5 index cards, identify and provide a short summary of the crisis, then explain why it would be a suitable topic for a persuasive presentation. 
4) Complete your "found poem" over the weekend based on the presentations you saw in class.

  • Read "1910" (Workbook page 51) and "White Darkness/Black Dreamings" (54).  Read each poem at least three times.  Next, write a 1:2 two-chunk paragraph in response to this question: what do these poems suggest about the heritage and beliefs of their authors?
