YOUD BETTER BELIEVE IT!

By Carla Evans

It has been a privilege to be involved with the writing of this book YOUD BETTER BELIEVE IT.

The Youd family are a part of Australian history. Way back in 1855,when fifteen-year-old William Youd left Bristol, England to set foot on what was then known as Van Diemans Land, his course was set.  (Van Diemans Land became a state of Australia and renamed Tasmania in 1856.)

William was one of many, with families or friends by their side, who bent their backs and used their ploughs and axes to birth the railways, towns, factories and homes of what is now Tasmania.

It was a time when hard work was essential, perseverance was necessary and courage was vital. When William first picked up his axe to make room for the plough, he did not know that his descendants would bring honour to the name of Youd by also taking up the axe.

FOREWORD

In assisting my friend Carla Evans with the laborious task of research for this book, I not only found Champions of the chopping arena but a very hard working close knit supportive family group. They had a very modest but most loving upbringing which served as the basis for the unpretentious Champions that individuals of the Youd family became.

As a child from 1952 onward, I recall many strangers such as Jack O’Tool and Vic Summers staying at our house. These strangers were men who my father, in his official capacity as President of the Tasmanian Axemans’ Association (TAA), had enticed from the mainland to compete in the Summer Chopping Carnival circuit. My childhood logic concluded they were only brought over to provide competition for the Youd Brothers who even then were a household name and it seemed won absolutely everything.

It was solely through individual effort and perseverance that produced so many enviable Youd records to make them champions and subsequent legends. A status rightfully preserved by their entry into The Australian Axemans’ Hall of Fame.

What can a mere North West Coast lad say to such a family on behalf of all Tasmanians and the Australian Chopping fraternity other than a simple but most sincere Thank you for the memories and the marvelous legacy you helped create.

With great appreciation,

Peter C. Aylett.
