VOICES FROM VOYAGER by Carla Evans

FOREWORD

FEBRUARY 10, 1964.......

A tragedy this day stunned our Nation - Australia’s worst peace-time military disaster - the sinking of the destroyer HMAS VOYAGER.

To determine the cause, the Government of the day hurriedly convened Investigations and Royal Commissions.  Today, these seem irrelevant.

Reality is that a collision between two warships did occur.  More than 80 lives were lost, many seriously injured and others permanently traumatized.

It is not Carla Evans’ intention to cover blame or highlight nautical error.  Her aim is to project the human factor associated with the disaster by recalling personal experiences of that fateful night.  Moving stories from both survivors and relatives and how these people picked themselves up and got on with their lives.  She achieves this with compassion and feeling.

FEBRUARY 10 1964

Has long gone, but the date remains ever present with relatives of those who died and all the survivors of HMAS VOYAGER’s sinking.
