Introduction
It was the end of April
1961, a Friday morning and I was in my study at the Blackburn Baptist Church
manse. I was completing the preparations for Sunday morning sermon, when
the telephone rang. It was the Rev. Arthur Wilkins, Minister of the Kew
Baptist church.
At that time in my ministry
I dearly wanted to become the denominational Youth Director and have the
privilege of speaking at Youth Teas and Youth Rallies. With Mr. Wilkins
on the phone I, in my vain thoughts said to myself, “Speaker at Kew –
wow! I have arrived!” At that time Mr. Wilkins was the part-time
Principal Air Chaplain for the O.P.D. (Other Protestant denominations) Group in
the Royal Australian Air Force.
“I need a full time
Chaplain for the RAAF and I believe you are the man for the job,” Were his
words to me.
“No thank you Mr. Wilkins,
I cannot leave Blackburn at this time. Two doors up the road we are
building our new church. The girders are going up and the brickwork is
commencing. Besides that, I am a part time Army Chaplain and my church
releases me once a year for an army camp. I cannot leave now.”
