In this painting Selena Boron expresses her deep concern about the progress of modern science and its effects on some basic human rights like freedom.
While freedom of expression through speech and writing have been taken away from us a long time ago and you can’t freely say or write what you want any more, in any part of the world – there is always some third party watching and censoring your actions, the freedom of thought was the last freedom still available to mankind – people were still able to think whatever they wanted, without being afraid that somebody will read or steal their thoughts.
Not any more – it was announced recently that scientists have discovered a way to read human thoughts! So the last true freedom is gone forever and hence the title “Freedom My Ass”! While Selena Boron fully appreciates the fact that this latest technology will certainly have some wonderful applications like for example in medicine reading the thoughts of an unconscious patient to help him better and faster, she is deeply concerned that most likely sooner or later it will be used for all the wrong reasons and will fall into the wrong hands like terrorists and criminals…
And while at the moment the scientists can only read human thoughts through the electrodes attached to the human head (at least this is what was officially announced), it is only a matter of time before they are able to read and record the thoughts wirelessly and spy on us all from satellites, through the walls etc. So, ladies and gentlemen, watch not only what you are doing inside your own homes but also what you are thinking…
The biggest face at the bottom of the painting expresses the disbelief, resignation, condemnation and protest of the ordinary human being that the last freedom, the freedom of thought, is gone forever, the smaller face above depicts all the different parties trying to steal the thoughts of others – with exposed brain sucking out somebody else’s thoughts. Even the Statue of Liberty in the left top corner has gone haywire, has lost its round shape and is wondering where it all leads to…
May be the world would be better off without this technology after all???
