A True Story

Neck Cooler

This summer has been particularly hot. And everyone is trying to figure out ways to stay cool. Lots of liquids, of course, and fans, lighter clothing and hats. With the drive to conserve electricity, there are fewer air conditioners running, or if there are, on much lower temperatures. But the lovely tinkling sound of “furin” helps to give a sense of coolness. And nice cold watermelon or an ice cone are other ways to become cool.

The other day in my Tai Chi class one of my friends gave me a neck strap. She told me to wet it and then wrap it around my neck. There was a bit of absorbent material inside that held the water and was meant to keep the neck cool, and therefore the entire body feeling refreshed. She assured me it would work. I tried it, of course, and did feel better for about a minute, until the bit of cloth warmed up. Then it became a sort of heavy burden around my neck. But I did appreciate my friend’s concern for me. And of course, I did not tell her what I really thought of it.

After the class I took this device home to wash and return to my friend. I wanted it to be clean, so put it in the washing machine. It came out pristine, but so swollen I thought it would burst! I hung it outside to dry, but after three days it was still wet, although a bit less enormous. When Tai Chi day came, I carefully wrapped it up and embarrassedly handed it back to my friend. “So sorry,” I said, “But I washed this marvelous neck cooler and it became very big. And it is still wet. Hontou ni gomennasai.

My friend took one look at the puffed up neck-piece and burst out laughing. “You aren’t meant to put it in the washing machine!” she said between giggles. “But it does not matter. I gave it to you. It is yours. So please use it as you wish.”

I brought it home and it is now hanging outside, where it has been for days. It still is not dry, is still very swollen, and still makes me laugh whenever I see it. And I wonder if I will ever use it again!
