A True Story

Male Initiation

When I first came to Japan I was astonished to see older men passed out under trees, completely drunk, with the contents of their briefcases spewed out on the sidewalk around them. No one paid much attention, but politely circled round them and continued on their way. Not only alcohol-filled men, but also sober men sometimes caught me off guard. On occasion I would see them peeing in bushes when the need arose at an inconvenient time or place.

The other day I was downtown and saw a small boy of about 3 or 4 years old. His mother was bending over him from behind and suddenly I saw a sparkling arc of water appear from between his legs. I smiled, thinking it rather sweet. And then suddenly I heard clapping and shouting and saw an older man’s face burst into a beaming grin. H raced over to the wee lad and said, “Well, my boy, now you are a real man!” The mother, a bit embarrassed, said, “It was an emergency and there was no toilet.” “I know, I know,” replied the old gentleman. “We all experience times like these. And seeing your son, so adorable, peeing in bush on Aoba-dori warms my heart immeasurably. Thank you for making my day!”

Then they continued chatting as the mother pulled up her son’s pants. It was indeed obvious that the old man thoroughly enjoyed witnessing the tiny little fellow’s very natural need being expressed in public. And his overt reaction, filled with so much love and laughter, made my day, too. Unlike my reaction of sweetness, however, this was a small ritual of support between an older man and a little boy. And I realized how lucky we all were by that unexpected encounter of strangers who connected quickly and positively over a seemingly small, but actually very important matter indeed: a spontaneous initiation ritual into the world of men.
