A True Story
Surprise Gifts At the end of last summer a friend and I traveled through Aomori Prefecture. It was a first for both of us, so we were in for some wonderful surprises. First of all, it was delightfully rural with lovely farms, high mountains, and splendid seacoasts, on both the Pacific and Sea of Japan. The Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori has recently opened, so there were many Tokyoites conveniently spending a few days at several onsen and Towada-ko Lake, and then returning home. Most folks from the capital city traveled on luxury trains and buses, but my friend and I preferred taking local transportation. That way were with the locals and could chat with some of them. My friend, who comes from New York, was astonished to see how honest country life was in Aomori. At one teeny train stop, with a box for a station and no stationmaster, a young man had left his bicycle unlocked leaning against the building. He bound off the train, climbed onto his bicycle, and rode away. My friend was wide-eyed seeing the total trust in that small faming community Having lived in Japan for a long time, I was not so surprised, but was impressed all the same. Things like that make me love this country as deeply as I do. In one place, where we knew no one, we got a phone call from the front desk in the morning. “You have visitors,” was all that the receptionist said. I was floored, and wondered who could be paying us a call. My friend and I went out to check. There in the lobby was an elderly couple we had met on the train the day before. “We have come to bring you a gift, “they said. “We have been to a foreign country and we feel a connection to you” Then they handed us a huge box of local sweets. My friend and I were speechless, but finally found words to pour out our thanks. When we got back to Sendai, I sent them a thank you note and enclosed my meishi. Sure enough, a few days later I got a call from the woman. “I have lots of beans and other vegetables in my garden. I will send you some. Shall I send meat as well? How about some wine?” Again, I was speechless and also deeply touched. And now I feel I have friends in Aomori. And for me they represent the true “kokoro” of the very lovely, warm northern tip of Honshu island. (A. T.)
