A True Story

You Don’t Have To Be Perfect

Unfortunately I am one of those people who always want to be perfect. No matter how well I do something, I always tell myself I could have done better. I tend to see every little fault in myself and others, which of course, condemns me to walk a very narrow path through life.

I am currently taking an art class; and you can be sure my self-critical mind is in full swing in those lessons. “This is not quite right.” “That is not how I wanted things to be.” “Surely you can do better than that.” “If others do so well, why can’t I?” Those sorts of thoughts always roll around in my head and heart as I struggle away. Unfortunately, I never win this relentless battle. How could I? In fact, how could anyone?

Every December this art school has a major student exhibition. Last year I flatly refused to join, no matter how much the teacher tried to coax me into it. But this year, because of seeing how the Japanese supported one another after the March 11 tragedy, I finally agreed to put in one piece. I am a member of the class, after all.

Later the teacher and I had a long chat. He told me, “You don’t have to be perfect. You saw some complete beginners’ works in the show. And they held their own. Do your best. And each time you can compare what you do with what you did before and see your slow, gradual progress. Don’t worry. You don’t have to be perfect!”

I smiled and went back to work. Later   towards the end of the lesson I asked this same man to help me write “Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu” on a lovely New Year card that I did not want to ruin with my awful Japanese. He looked at me totally aghast. “What! You want me to write on this card! Well, ah. I’m not so sure I can do it right. Let me see. If my wife were here, she could do it. Her calligraphy is outstanding. Oh dear, what shall we do? I know! The secretary downstairs writes well. Let me go ask her. ” And off he dashed to pass the job on to her.

I smiled again. I guess perfectionism has its relentless grip on my teacher, too. But obviously he is completely unaware of it!
