A True Story
Washington East and West I use H. I. S and enjoy working with one man who is very knowledgeable and helpful. He makes every effort to find cheap tickets for me and ensures that I get an aisle seat, which I prefer. The other day we were chatting before getting down to business and he told me a funny story about himself. He also gave me permission to write and essay about it! Just after he graduated from high school he planned to spend a year in Washington in order to learn English. Of course the agent who made all the arrangements told him a lot about where he would be going and what to expect. But being a rather carefree teenager, he let things go in one ear and out the other. He was excited about going to America’s capital city for a year. He knew it would be very interesting seeing famous places and being near the workings of government. As the departure date got closer, he finally decided to pull out a map. “Now let’s see. It is Washington, but the suburb is Seattle. Let me see if I can find it on the map.” He searched and searched, but could not find the area he was looking for. Suddenly by chance his eye swept across the map to the west coast. Right there before his eye was Seattle, Washington State. My friend let out a scream! “My god! I am not going to Washington, DC! I’m going to Washington State! I can’t believe it!!” Then he frantically repacked and had to rethink his entire year ahead. He added that he thoroughly enjoyed the year in Washington State and was glad he went. He also said he had never been to Washington, DC, but hoped to someday. I laughed at his story. Of course, but now wonder if when I buy a ticket to say Rome, Italy, I might end up in Rome, Georgia or such unexpected place! I will have to check very carefully from now on to be sure I get a ticket going to the actual destination I intend to go! (A. T.)

And he is renowned for his use of light in his works. Three of Vermeer’s and the works by other Dutch painters are shown in this exhibition.
