A True Story

Since the Quake and Tsunami

I love how much Sendai has become like a close community since the disastrous event of Mar. 11. I find that people still immediately ask how you and your family are and where you were when the quake hit. And of course, everyone has a story to tell.

My students seem relieved to be back at university, too. And happily, they seem to be a bit more mature than usual. A counselor came to the campus to help teachers with his tragedy. He told us to be very open about what happened and that would allow students to express grief if they needed to. But even so, I am trying to make classes fun and focused on things youngsters are interested in. So, hopefully it will be a good year.

I had to move because of the damage to my old shack. I ended up staying for five weeks at my friend’s mother’s home while I searched far and wide for a place to live. Lucky for me I was able to move to a nice apartment not too far from where I had been for the past 15 years. That means the postman and delivery people know me. When I open the door to get a parcel, they inevitably say, “What are you doing here!” And then we have a long chat, swapping stories of our adventures since the quake. But we always add, “We are still getting them daily, aren’t we? Have to be careful!”

Likewise there is beauty in very unexpected places. The other night, for example, as I peddled home really late on my bicycle the road crews were out working diligently. The scene was stunning. There were huge, colorful lights whirling and flashing to warn traffic. In front of them there was a man swinging a bright red rod to further direct the cars. He was doing it as graciously as a dancer would. The energy of all those moving lights was strong and magnificent. I was truly inspired. But that was not all. In addition, the workers were in perfect synchronicity. Their intense concentration and movements were extremely beautiful and could have been something on a stage, like a fabulous modern dance or some such. The next day the road was deep black and smooth and drivers sped by completely unaware of the efforts put out for them the night before.

My stories could go on and on about the truly impressive Japanese collective spirit. It is beautiful how it continues to allow all of us to pick up the pieces and move forward day after very precious day.
