My parents gave me my university education, all the way through graduate school. But after that they very lovingly said, “You are on your own. Go out and use your education. Get experiences. Learn to stand on your own two feet.” So, out I plunged into life: often falling, scraping and bruising my self, but always pulling myself back up and soldiering on. It did not take long for me to find out that life near where I had grown up was too confining for me, so I set out to blaze greater trails. I started by crossing the USA and backpacking through South America. Then I headed for Europe, where I trained to be an English teacher. That enabled me to work in Spain, Northern Africa, and South East Asia before coming to Japan. I also spent a year on the move in India. And then struggled my way across Central Asia, amazed by the rich, rugged history of the countries along the Silk Road. In between teaching, I traveled, of course; I loved the cultures I was in, either living or passing through, so spent many an hour learning as much as I could about the people and culture of each place. But after more than fifteen years on the move, I knew I needed routes. And just as I became aware of that, a friend invited me to Japan. I came and have never left, except for brief trips here and there. After all those years and experiences, I feel I have completed my parents’ assignment well. I can indeed take care of myself. But some people do not seem to think so. The other day I was to meet and older friend at Izumity 21. I had not been there in years, so thought I had to exit the station and walk a few blocks to get there. “No! No! That’s not the way!” She said in an overly concerned tone. “I’m worried you can’t get there on your own. Let’s go there together.” I am not used to such clutching closeness. So, I told her I would be fine going by myself. But she insisted. So we finally agreed to meet on the subway. She would be on the 2:00 pm train in car number two. I was to get on at the next station at 2:02 sharp. It worked. We met exactly on time. At Izumi Station I saw the sign for Izumity 21 first, so pointed out the route to my friend. From there she took charge. When we arrived she said, “Wasn’t that easy? Now you know how to get here. So when you come the next time, you won’t get lost.” I smiled, also wondered how she would have managed riding on the top of rickety buses, walking for blocks with a knee-killing backpack, hunting for a hotel at night, asking passers-by for directions ---going from one end of this earth to the other on her own. Yet, that said, I should add that I was never really alone in my travels. None of those adventures happened without the generous help of others. Wherever I went, they gave kindly and thoughtfully, often going out of their way to assist me, even in the most unexpected times and places. And maybe that, too, although unspoken, was a lesson my parents hoped I would learn: my indebtedness to others as I sought my own fiercely independent way. (A, T.)
