If you are already using Moodle with your students then you should definitely try SLOODLE out as it allows students to carry out Moodle activities within Second Life.
Introducing SloodleSloodle provides a range of tools for supporting learning and teaching to the immersive virtual world; tools which are fully integrated with a tried and tested web-based learning management system used by thousands." The Web Intercom - Link Second Life chat to Moodle chat roomsMy favourite tool in the package is the WebIntercom:
"The WebIntercom connects the public text chat in Second Life to a chatroom in Moodle.
This allows chat to be shared between Second Life and Moodle, which is useful if some people do not have access to Second Life.
(A good example of this is the Teen Grid, where some users may not have clearance -- an authorised user could setup a WebIntercom while others chat from Moodle).
The Moodle chat is also logged, which is useful for keeping a record of in-world chat sessions."
The Sloodle Toolbar - Perform classroom gestures in Second LifeI also highly recommend the Sloodle Toolbar, even if you aren't using Moodle as it allows you students to perform "classroom gestures" in second life just by clicking a button. "The Sloodle Toolbar is a 'HUD object' (Heads-Up Display). This means it will be displayed as an interface item on your screen, with buttons you can interact with. The latest version has 3 main functions: blog, gestures, and AviLister."
Ninehub.com - Set up a free Moodle site.Even if your institution isn't using Moodle you can still try Sloodle out by setting up a free Moodle site over at www.ninehub.com .
All Moodle sites come pre-installed with the Sloodle code so that they are ready to be plugged into Second Life from the get go - it's well worth a look!
