Recording & broadcasting video from Second Life

On this page I'll go over two tools that you can use to allow students who can't log into Second Life to still watch events that are taking place in world.

Which tool you use will depend on the type of video or broadcast you wish to make, we'll look at each case in turn:

Case 1 - You want to record an event in Second Life that students can watch later on.

In this instance I would recommend that you use Xfire to record what your second life clinet is showing.  Xfire will produce the film as an AVI file which can then be imported into a video editing program, such as windows movie maker, where extra transtions, titles and effects can be added.  the resulting film can then be uploaded to your institutions VLE or blog or perhaps a video sharing site like You Tube.

Here's an example of footage recorded in Xfire, edited in Window Movie maker & then uploaded to YouTube for students to watch:

Case 2 - You want to make a live video broadcast from Second Life that others can watch via a web page without having to load up or log into Second Life.

This option can be very handy if you are holding an event or demo in Second Life and you have some students who do not have powerful enough PC's to run the Second Life client.

If this is the case then you can download and install Procaster - this will let you set up a free online "tv channel" and will then stream what's shown on your PC to this TV channel for others to watch.

It will also let you broadcast from a web cam plus your desktop so you aren't just limited to showing whats going on in Second Life.

If you combine this with Metabolt then students will be able to see what's going on via the video and still interact with you in Second Life using the text based metabolt client.
