INT. DANA'S BEDROOM - DAY
JEFF (23) wakes up and finds himself in an unfamiliar room.
He's bleary eyed, hung-over and disoriented. The curtains are
closed, and the room is murky. He rubs his eyes and stares at
the wrought-iron bed knob.
Then he notices there is a lump in the bed next to him. Her
girlish feet stick out from under the blankets, toenails
painted bubble-gum PINK.
The realization hits him like a wave of nausea.
Jeff slips out of bed very carefully so as not to wake her.
He discovers that he himself is naked. So, he gathers up his
clothes from the floor, and tip-toes out of the room.
INT. DANA'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - DAY
Now wearing his pants, Jeff stumbles out into the living room
and hits speed-dial on his digital phone. Suddenly dizzy, he
sits down on the floor.
A woman, ALICE (23), answers, she also sounds groggy, hung
over, and annoyed at being woken up.
ALICE (O.C.)
(croaking)
I've killed men for less.
JEFF
Don't hang up. I need your help.
ALICE (O.C.)
I'm going back to sleep now...
Jeff looks around the trashed apartment - plastic cups, wine
bottles, and overflowing ashtrays. The hard wood floor sticky
with spilled beer. Jeff struggles to think.
JEFF
No. Wait... I was at a party.
ALICE (O.C.)
Yes...
Jeff looks back down the hall at the CLOSED BEDROOM DOOR. He
keeps his voice down.
JEFF
Whose house was it at?
ALICE (O.C.)
You don't remember? You're such a
train wreck.
JEFF
Seriously, whose party was it?
LIVING ROOM - NIGHT - INTERCUT
We see hazy images from the party, but there is NO SOUND.
The living room is packed with bodies. Bodies slipping by one
another. Bodies posing, flirting, dancing and weaving. We
never see anyone's face directly, only the bodies.
At the center, lithe and sexy in a flimsy, cotton summer
dress, is DANA (23).
ALICE (V.O.)
It was Dana's party. Now can I
PLEASE go back to sleep?
JEFF (V.O.)
Who's Dana?
ALICE (V.O.)
My BEST FRIEND, Dana? From high
school? I introduced you to her.
CLOSE ON JEFF - DAY
Still staring back at the bedroom door down the hall, his
brow knits as he grasps at vague memories.
JEFF
She's your best friend?
He can hear the SOUNDS of the party. VOICES and MUSIC swell
and recede. He hears a perky female voice chirp above the
noise, "Hi! I have heard so much about you!"
INT. KITCHEN - MORNING - CONTINUOUS
Jeff walks into the kitchen, a disaster zone of lime rind,
guacamole, and broken glasses. The sink is stacked with
dishes and the floor is sticky with beer and paper cups.
ALICE (O.C.)
What's wrong with you? Did you
black out?
JEFF
Yeah... kind of. I'm trying to
piece together what happened.
Suddenly the kitchen is filled with undulating bodies, like
SILENT ghosts without faces...
Dana slowly approaches Jeff, who is by himself in the corner.
Her hands gesticulate wildly and she points at his chest.
Over the garbled sounds of the party we hear DANA'S VOICE,
"Don't Deny it. You know it's true. If you can't say it,
you're an idiot."
JEFF (V.O.)
I remember hating her voice - it
was piercing like a rusty flute.
As Dana flirts, she strokes the stem of her wine glass and
fingers the rim, making circles around the edge.
ALICE (V.O.)
No... I think you liked her. I
think you fucked her.
JEFF (V.O.)
No she didn't. No I didn't.
Dana stretches, rubs her belly, and plays with her hair. She
reaches out and touches his chest.
ALICE (V.O.)
Just admit it. I'm happy for you.
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
The dance floor is crowded with writhing BODIES - a frenzied
movement of the legs, arms, hips and shoulders.
The body at the center, wiggling and bouncing, nearly
spilling out of her cotton dress, is DANA.
JEFF (V.O.)
I swear I felt no attraction to her
whatsoever. I couldn't stand her.
Dancing with her, so close their bodies bounce against each
other, is Jeff. They bump and grind with abandon.
ALICE
Then... LET ME GO BACK TO SLEEP!
CLOSE ON JEFF - MORNING - DAY
The SOUNDS and VOICES from the party echo in his ears. Dana
yells out over the thumping music. "If you know it's true,
and you can't say it, you're an coward."
JEFF
Help me remember the conversation I
had with her. It's important. She
really wanted me to DO something.
ALICE
Yeah... like tie her to a bedpost?
INT. LIVING ROOM - ALICE'S MEMORY - NIGHT
Through the bustling bodies we can see DANA'S BODY, sitting
on the couch in between two others. Everyone seems drunk.
JEFF (V.O.)
That's not it. Do you remember her
sitting on the couch next to me?
We can't see her face, but Dana talks to Alice, whose arms
and legs are crossed - her smaller body tight and hunched.
ALICE (V.O.)
Yes... I was sitting right on the
other side of her.
Even as her chin is turned to Alice, Dana's hips are turned
towards Jeff - her legs spread, fingers touching her belly.
JEFF (V.O.)
What was she saying?
Alice looks uncomfortable. Her body shifts awkwardly. She
can't figure out what to do with her hands.
ALICE (V.O.)
I don't remember the words. I
remember things in pictures.
Alice abruptly stands up and stomps off towards the hall.
ON ALICE - NIGHT
She's very drunk weaving down the hallway past other party
goers, RUNNING towards the bathroom.
JEFF (V.O.)
Well... What happened to you after
that? You just disappeared.
ALICE (V.O.)
I don't know. I had a lot to drink.
INT. BATHROOM - ON ALICE - CONTINUOUS
Alice enters and locks the door. She looks like she might
throw up. We don't see her face but, her hands are shaking.
JEFF (V.O.)
Listen. I have to admit something
to you. I woke up in Dana's bed.
She tries splashing water on her face but it doesn't help.
She's very upset.
ALICE (V.O.)
Was SHE in the bed?
JEFF (V.O.)
Yes.
She flips off the light and starts to cry.
ALICE (V.O.)
Was she naked?
JEFF (V.O.)
Yeah - right down to her bubble gum
pink toenails.
(beat)
You're upset. I can tell..
Sitting on the floor, arms wrapped around her legs, Alice
tries to stop crying but she can't. Her whole body trembles.
ALICE (V.O.)
I'm the one who introduced you two.
I'm fine with it.
ON DANA - AT THE PARTY
We follow DANA as she walks through the party. Through pools
of light and shadow. Through gauntlets of bodies. Her hips
swaying like hypnotist's watch.
ALICE (V.O.)
It's been like this since she was
twelve years old.
(beat)
Dana just floats through a room
totally unaware of how she changes
everything... for EVERYONE.
When she reaches the end of the hall Dana takes Jeff's hand,
leans towards him and WHISPERS INTO HIS EAR.
ON JEFF - DAY
Jeff's head is filled with the SOUND of Dana's voice
taunting, "say the words. Go on. Say the words."
JEFF
It wasn't like that. She just
wanted me to "say the words."
ALICE
What words?
JEFF
Don't know. But I didn't say them.
INT. DARK BEDROOM - CLOSE ON ALICE - DAY
A mop of scraggly, brown hair parts like a curtain to reveal
Alice's face as she talks into her cell phone.
Her hand pressed against her forehead, her eyes closed as if
hoping to go back to sleep after she's won the argument,
she's impatient and annoyed.
If she weren't so hung-over, you'd call her cute.
ALICE (V.O.)
Face it. You said the words and you
took her to bed. I watched you.
JEFF (O.C.)
You... what?
INT. DARK ROOM - NIGHT
We just see Alice's body as she stumbles from the hallway
into the murky room and flops down on a pile of bedding.
ALICE (O.C.)
Before I went home, I had to lie
down for a second. I had the spins.
I passed out on her OTHER twin bed.
JEFF
She has TWO beds? Two beds? How
could I not have noticed you?
Light spills in from the doorway, and she can see shadows
cast from dancing bodies in the hall. Then the door SHUTS,
cutting off the light.
ALICE (O.C.)
It was pitch black when you came
in. You were really, REALLY drunk.
JEFF
And you watched us?
INT. DARK ROOM - NIGHT - ALICE'S POV
Dark bodies wriggle like fish deep underwater, slipping and
sliding, peeling off clothes.
ALICE (V.O.)
Just a glimpse. I remember looking
over and seeing you. I remember
sitting up, and she sat up too.
The silhouette of a perfect, lithe, nubile body sits up.
She's looking DIRECTLY BACK INTO CAMERA. The body freezes for
a moment, as if shocked to see another in the room.
ALICE
For a moment she and I were just
looking at each other, so close she
could have been my shadow.
But then the image goes fuzzy and dissolves.
JEFF
And then?
INT. FRILLY BEDROOM - CLOSE ON ALICE - INTERCUT
ALICE
And then nothing. It was
embarrassed. I... must have just
got out of there and gone home.
INT. LIVING ROOM - CLOSE ON JEFF - INTERCUT
A singing voice rings in his ears.
JEFF
You did. I heard your voice, in the
hall singing... "Matchmaker.
Mattchmaker. Make me a match."
ALICE
I am a matchmaker. If it wasn't for
me, you'd never get laid.
JEFF
If it makes you feel better, I
think all we did was make out.
ALICE
She was NAKED. I saw her grinding
on you like stripper.
JEFF
But I stopped her. I remember
saying, "I don't want our first
time to be drunk. I love you..."
Beat.
ALICE
You said you loved her? You just
met her.
JEFF
I... I think those were the words.
The words she wanted me to say.
ALICE
What did she say back?
There is a long silence. We INTERCUT achingly intimate images
of LOVEMAKING...
JEFF (V.O.)
I... I.. remember hearing... "I
love you too."
ALICE (V.O.)
She would NEVER say that.
JEFF (V.O.)
How do you know?
ALICE (V.O.)
She's the only friend I have that
I've known longer than you. No way
she said that.
(beat)
So do you... love her?
... her fingers clasping with his fingers... his legs
spooning her legs... his lips kiss the back of her neck...
JEFF (V.O.)
I... I... It... It was just a
conversation between bodies.
ALICE (V.O.)
I thought you don't remember what
her body looked like.
JEFF (V.O.)
I remember how it felt.
ALICE (V.O.)
Yeah. How did it feel?
... a body sliding and rolling over another body.
JEFF (V.O.)
Like a dream.
CLOSE ON ALICE
Eyes still closed. Suffering. At the end of her rope.
ALICE
Why are you telling me all this?
JEFF (O.C.)
I tell you everything. Who else am
I going to talk to?
ALICE
To HER, you idiot. To her. It's
obvious she has feelings for you.
CLOSE ON JEFF
He really doesn't want to do that.
JEFF
Look... do you want to meet for a
coffee? I have to get out of here.
ALICE (O.C.)
No. I've had enough... I'm done. Go
talk to "the body."
Jeff hears a click, and the line goes dead.
ON ALICE
As she drops her phone on the bedside table, her eyes flutter
open. She reaches over and pulls open the curtains...
... and looks startled. Disoriented. Her mouth hangs open.
She sits up, and is shocked to discover that under the sheet
she clutches to her chest, she is completely NUDE.
She sees her girlish feet sticking out from under the
blankets, toenails painted bubble-gum PINK.
She realizes where she is, but the full impact only hits her
when she looks to the other side of the room and sees, not a
second twin bed but...
... a full length MIRROR.
She reaches out and touches the glass, her reflection staring
back at her, reeling in booze-addled epiphany.
Then her phone buzzes, making her jump. She answers it.
ALICE
Hello?
WOMAN'S VOICE (O.C.)
Hi, you slut.
ALICE
Who is this? Dana?
DANA (O.C.)
It's your matchmaker.
(beat)
When can I have my room back?
Alice looks up to see Jeff staring dumbly at her from the
doorway, still clutching his cell phone. His looks like a
patient who's just had electroshock.
JEFF
(deadpan)
There's only one bed.
