On Tuesday, May 3, 2011, we got the key to our clubhouse. Suite 106 in the 2445 Truxton Road building at Liberty Station in the Point Loma area of San Diego. In
general, you'll find us here Wednesday and Sunday
afternoons. It's not unusual, however, to find us here on other
afternoons or in the morning after 10:00. Directions From the San Diego north coastal area: take Interstate 5 south to the Rosecrans Street exit. Go about 1.6 miles on Rosecrans and turn left on Womble Road; the first stop sign is Truxton; turn left on Truxton and take the first left into parking lot. From the East County: go west on Interstate 8 to the Rosecrans Street exit. Go about 1.6 miles on Rosecrans and turn left on Womble Road; the first stop sign is Truxton; turn left on Truxton and take the first left into parking lot. From the south: take Interstate 5 north to the Pacific Highway. Exit on Barnett which bends to the right and becomes Lytton Street, proceed to Rosecrans. Turn left on Rosecrans and go 0.7 mile and turn left on Womble Road; the first stop sign is Truxton; turn left on Truxton and take the first left into parking lot. Suite 106 is on the inner colonnade breezeway along the South Promenade, number 64 on the Liberty Station map shown below. You can see the number 2445 on the upper left corner of the building below the "available for Lease" banner: Go through the archway to the left of Five Guys (a great place to get a burger, by the way!) to the colonnade breezeway and turn right. Alternatively, you can enter to the left of Starbucks, go to the colonnade breezeway and turn left. Here are the doors to our suite in the breezeway, looking toward Five Guys. We put signs up on the doors and windows to tell passers-by who we are and announcing the upcoming work day. Inside, there was work to do - LOTS of work to do! The suite had been used as a storage room, so it desperately needed a good cleaning. The walls had never been painted and the windows needed curtains. We cleaned up, started painting, and moved the modules in from the various members' homes. In the back corner is a private unisex bathroom. Friday May 13 we finished the painting and concrete cleanup so it was time to start setting up modules. We moved the packaged bundles around to their approximate positions and started unpacking and setting them up. Before long, they were all in place, properly spaced in the room and ready for leveling and connection on Sunday. It's a little short because three modules are still at their owners' homes being worked on, but all the rest are set up. This shot shows the current state of the new railyard modules. We've got some work to do to finish it before we take the layout to the NMRA/NASG convention in July! On Sunday, May 16, we got the front half of the layout leveled and connected. We set up accessories and freight cars on the Gilbert Siding, connected the electrical, and tested to make sure everything is working properly. Finally, we ran an engine on each of the two mainlines. Stay tuned for more photos as we make progress. Better yet, come on by, take a look, and lend a hand! |
