How can we provide our Adult ESL students with the skills they need to be successful in future education and work upon exiting ESL?  In this session, we will look at how to incorporate note-taking, organizational, writing, critical listening, reading and thinking skills from beginning to advanced levels.

Instructor/Student Conferences and Generation 1.5 College Composition Students

The feedback given to students in composition classes is a key component in the successful development of the students as writers.  This study focuses on the participation of Spanish-speaking students in instructor-student conferences in two English 110 classes at California State University – Bakersfield.  Handouts will be provided.

Peer-Mentor Program Model

This presentation presents a model of a student peer-mentor program. Peer-mentoring raises student motivation, while lowering attrition, by facilitating a student-centered classroom emphasizing collaborative activities with task-based projects that are mentor-led.  Participants will receive handouts of a peer-mentor program adaptable to their individual programs and/or classes.

The WRITE Institute: Summary Writing for Long-term English Learners (Workshop)

The WRITE Institute of the San Diego County Office of Education is offering a packet of curriculum activities to scaffold writing for long-term secondary and college English learners and struggling writers. Participants will experience interactive demonstrations of strategies designed to help struggling writers summarize and analyze complex texts.

Processes for Critical Vocabulary Development & Writing

This interactive workshop will illustrate two processes for developing academic vocabulay for writing in both narrative and expository text. Participants will engage in activities, view lesson plans and web-based examples for developing English vocabulary and writing in a critical manner. The presenter will provide an opportunity for individuals to brainstorm, discuss, and apply lessons and acivities grounded in critical literacy.
