Special Newsletter (July)

posted May 31, 2009 12:13 PM by PwD-SD ADMIN.   [ updated Aug 1, 2009 6:27 AM ]

Good Day Members,

Being July is upon us, I'm sending out a special newsletter, wishing everybody either a Happy Canadian Day or a Happy Independence Day! Stay safe and sound on this special weekend in where we all celebrate our countries Independence Day.

A national holiday here in the United States, commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, in the city Philadelphia. (ie. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).

While Canada Day used to be known as Dominion Day back and had several names before, celebrates on the First of July even though it wasn't born on that day.

Canada Day, known as Dominion Day in 1982, wasn't actually born on the First of July. However the holiday celebrates the events that took place on that day. The British North America Act created the Canadian federal government on July 1, 1867. This Act stated that Canada would become an independent dominion now called territory of England, which is why Canada
Day was originally called Dominion Day.

Check out our Chit Chat board to learn more about both Countries Independence and to participate in the discussion "What does Independence mean to you?" Whether it be minor or majour independence. Doesn't matter it's what you feel it means to you.

<snip> Because I am able, as an individual with a disability, to train a service dog for my own needs or even be able to have such a trained animal that I don't have to depend on a human helper in which wouldn't get the signals right or assume things they shouldn't. (ie the human helper).<snip>
Chit Chat Board:
http://pwdsdawareness.freeforums.org/what-does-independence-mean-to-you-t483.html

We also celebrated the 10th anniversary of a landmark ruling for people with disabilities on June 22nd. The case, which reinforced the Americans with Disabilities Act, was called Olmstead v. LC and EW. Read more at: What's Happening Board.

Welcome new Members....
I like to take this time to welcome all our new members. If you haven't yet please take the time to introduce yourself. Also you will be automatically added to our *News Pups*. To know more about this or anything else check our Help Desk for the answers. If you don't see something just ask. Chances are we haven't thought about it yet. lol.

Sorry for those that may have received an non activity post. That feature was accidentally turned on which I don't see the need for it being I send out newsletters about what's happening every other month. Unless of course your in our News Pups user-groups for the monthly updates. Sorry about any confusion that this may have caused. It should be turned off now.

Again have a safe First / Fourth of July weekend.
Next month (August) will be our normal newsletter.

Thank You,
PwD SD Admin

We finally got a New Look... *Royal Blue*! There's several features that the old style didn't have. We are able to have our special logo as well as the text for Screen Reader Users.  You are able to change the Width Size to suit your own needs. You may have to click on it when going to a new page but it does remember those settings unless you *eat* I mean clean out your cookies. lol. But doesn't take much time to reset. Take a moment or two if you haven't popped over lately and check it out. Let us know what you think as we always appreciate your input.

 Health Concerns & Veterinary Medicine:
We decided to change the name of this board to Human Health Concerns & Veterinary Medicine. This way everything is in one place as not only do we have to deal with our animals but ourselves must come first. We may make a Subforum to keep the vet meds and human health separate if it gets way too much. Tell us what you would like.

Tech Maintenence

posted Apr 22, 2009 7:10 AM by K9 Mama

Not sure if this will effect our forum or not. Though it will not effect anything here so you could continue to read.

But anyway just to inform memebers, there was a notice that some forums will be off line this Friday Morning from 12am - 3am PST. It should only last about 20 minutes give or take. I just wanted to alert everybody that this may happen and not to worry we are still here. After all support / network techs need to do maintenance once in a while. Lol.

As always, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Good Day,

 Welcome New Members:
I like to take this time to welcome all our new members! Hope you enjoy our forum and if you have questions or suggestions please do not hesitate to ask. If you haven't Introduce yourself, don't be shy, grins, take a moment  or two and tell us about yourself and where you heard about us here in the Getting to Know You Chat! Honest we do not bite! Grins!

January News Letter Correction:
There was an error on my part when sending out the newsletter.  Oops! It was worded by-monthly instead of being every other month. Again Oops cannot blame the computer nor my dog on that one no matter how much I would love too. Grins! Nevertheless for those of you that would prefer to get a monthly newsletter please contact us either at pwd.sd.admin@gmail.com or you could join News Pups Group. Which ever is easier!  Some of you already requested monthly and have been added to our News Pups Group, therefore you do not have to request again.

To join  the News Pups Group through our site just log in and click on the User Control Panel. Scroll down and click on Usergroup. Check News Pups and submit. It will pop up a window to confirm, click yes. That's It, your all done!

In a Directory:
Yes you got it, we were invited to add our forum in a directory over at The Disability Information Website !  Whoooo Hoooo! Go check it out!  If you click the disability forum link, you will be able to make comments as well as rate our site. Hint Hint. I was also asked to write an article and submit it as well. Still working on it but how cool is that!

New Styles:
I like to thank the members whom requested finding a style that doesn't have red fonts within. As it makes it harder access for reading.  This alerted me about such issues that some members may have with colourations. One of the reasonings I add new styles as much as I can. Also am trying to find a good default style to use in which it would have both the logo and text for screen readers. Still looking though!

Hopefully  AZ_Settlers style maybe what you are looking for.  The background is black and the lettering is yellowish. Dark yellow seems to be when you click on the board links and as far as we can tell there is no red within except those that were put in by posting.  Please give us your feedback as we always appreciate hearing from you.

AOL Log In Issues:
Members using AOL been having some issues when it comes to logging in and staying logged in. This is do to the conflict that AOL is having with our server unfortunately! Nevertheless there is a way around this situation.  All one has to do is to download and install Firefox. Once you are connected to the net close out the AOL and run Firefox Browser (download at:  http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ ). This has stop the automatic logging off issue so one could navigate and post on the boards.  One thing though, and this is for all members as well,  remember when you log on to have the check box check for Log me on automatically each visit as that too after some time will log you out. Sorry for the inconvenience this cause but AOL is out of our control.  If you have any issues or questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Some Changes Made to the Forum:
Sharing Photos: Suggestions were made and we listen. <g>. Therefore we decided to remove our Gallery Board from our community.  Instead of having one special area, one now may add their photos within the other chat boards. The members photo galleries were moved into the chat boards, either getting to know you or the service animal, pet chat.  Learn More about Sharing Photos, check the Help Desk board.

Service Animal Only Chat has been revamped so our pets may chat with our service animals as our service animals maybe lonely at times. <g>. Seriously many of us have pets too.  Now it's called Service Animal & Pet Chat! The more the merrier! <G>.

New Profile System has been added. We need your feedback! Please stop on by and check it out. Although you may want to edit your profiles as it gives more to add. To do this go into your User Control Panel to Profile.  Add the information that you don't mind others to view. Then click edit permission settings which you may set for just friends, members. Non register members cannot see members profile for added security. The new system lets you do a lot more including real time shout outs.  For more about this new system check our Help Desk. And again please give us your feedback on how you like or don't like it as we always appreciate what you think.  Thanks!

What's Happening in the news:
1.  United Airlines to Pay $850,000 ... (What's Happening)
2.  How to Trick a Tick by Dr. Nancy Kay (Health Concerns & Veterinary Medicine)
3. New Devices Aid Deaf People ... (Equipment / Technology)
4. Canadians make learning disabilities breakthrough ... (Learning Disabilities)

If you haven't been over here for some time do stop on by and check them out. Let us know what you think in our feedback. See what's in the boards, and  chat with others. Don't forget to pop into Getting to Know You Chat Board and Introduce yourself as well as welcome our new members.

February 2009

posted Mar 18, 2009 1:25 PM by PwD-SD ADMIN.

G'Day,
As there are only 28 days in February, this newsletter almost was sent out late. Oops!  Nevertheless I remembered close to the end of the day so here we go. Grins!

What's Happening?
Depending on where you are at, spring is just around the corner which means I like to see those spring colours. lol.
Because of some issues that some members are having with colouration. In the discriptions (ie red) I did change it to a more bluish purple. Hope this will be much better for members.  As always I appreciate your feedbacks both on the forum as well as direct emails.

Along with members request I have been slowly installing more styles / themes so our members could have a choice of colouration that suits their needs and give them more accessability.

Here's what we have installed so far:
610nm;
Avalon Cyan;
Blue Moon;
Milky Way (the default)
Milky Way Red;
prosilver;
Vista; and
Zeitgeist.

To few these at this time go into your user control panel under board preference and change the theme/style. You could always change it back to what you had if you don't like it.

In the News:

1. Vice President Joe Biden today announced Kareem Dale as Special Assistant to the President for Disability Policy.

2. The Board continues to make progress on guidelines it is developing or updating in a variety of areas. At its January meeting, the Board approved the text of final guidelines for Federal outdoor developed areas and the text of proposed guidelines for accessible public rights-of-ways.

3. Last November, the Board released draft updates to its ADA Accessibility Guidelines for buses and vans to gather feedback from the public. By the close of the comment period on January 20th, the Board had received comments from trade associations, disability groups, consumers, transit operators and authorities, researchers, and manufacturers of buses and vehicle components, including lifts, seats, and wheelchair securement systems.

If you haven't been over here for some time do stop on by and check them out. Let us know what you think in our feedback. See what's in the news, and  chat with others. Don't forget your service animal may post in their own chat board. lol.

G, Day,
Wow can you believe it's the end of January of 2009 already! Boy where did the time go when we're having so much fun. <g>.

I like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new members, we are happy to have you here with us. If you haven't done so please pop into Getting to Know You Chat board and introduce yourself and don't forget if you have a service animal we like to hear about him/her too or they could chat in their own board. (Service Animal Only Chat). They have equal time here. <g>.  As a reminder you must be logged in to post.

It's only been four months (Sept. 1, 2008) since I've created this forum which I like to thank all members and staff for making our forum a wonderful place in such a short time, with all your educational information, friendly chatting, ideas and feedbacks. And would like to wish everybody a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year as we begin a new chapter in life.

What changes will we forsee in 2009!

Starting this year we will be sending out every other month, newsletter in order to keep you up to date on what's happening. However, if some of you would prefer per month please contact me at pwd.sd.admin@gmail.com and I will be sure to put you on our special monthly listings. Otherwise the first  newsletter will be around the end of March.

I created a website called PwD SD News. The site will be for keeping the archive newsletters in a special place as well as having a outline of our boards including new boards in which we just added. This way you will be able to go back and read the newsletters at your own  convience. Take time to check it out and let us know what you think in our feedback board: http://sites.google.com/site/sdawareness/Home

Because there has been some issues with the Live Chat Room,  unfortunately we will not be able to activate it until the bugs are out at this time.

There have been some changes made to our forum. All the chat boards are now in our Don't Be Shy, We Don't Bite catagory for easier navagation. The Chat About Our Animals has a subform of Service Animals Only Chat since both chats deal with our animals in one form or another. <g>
As some of you requested, we added new sub~boards in order to make navigation easier.

  1. Around the World! A sub-forum of News, Articles & Video.  It's a place to read about the various types of disabilities around the world that's in the news. Making it easier to navigate between the USA and other countries articles.
  2. Archives! A Sub-forum of U.S. Disability Rights & Responsibilities (Rights & Responsibilities Board). Due to the fact that many of the laws have been changing and are out of date or going to be out of date, this board will make it easier to keep the older laws / history separated and less confusing.
  3. Breeds! A Sub-forum of The Training. A place where we could talk about the various breeds. Their temperament, characteristics, and personalities from our own experience with such breeds.  Check out the Great Dane Breed!  Have a question about a certain breed this is the area to ask.
  4. (PwD) Private Chat! A Sub-forum of Chat About Disabilities in General. A place where members could chat about one's disabilities privately, to vent, get support or ask questions.
News Alert:

The Dept. of Justice withdrawn the federal registers final draft of the Amendment Act. (Title II and Title III). Remember To post your opinions on this issue, you must first log in.

The ACAA Part 382 Final Rule Service Animals  will be in effect May of 2009 .

Read about President Obama's agenda to empower People with Disabilities.  What's Happening Now!

If you haven't been over here for some time do stop on by and check them out. Let us know what you think in our feedback. See what's in the news, and  chat with others.

Thank You,

December 2008

December 18, 2008 and was updated January 1st, 2009.
G, Day,

Because the next two weeks many will be celebrating the holidays I thought I would go ahead and have open chat room starting this Saturday. (Dec. 20th) and have it go each and everyday for two weeks for those that would
love to come and chat instead of just having our chat room open for Saturday only at 6pm EST (3pm PST). The chat room will be open both in the early afternoon and evening. All we ask as you have done in the passed is to remember the rules of the board.   So if you have nothing to do during the holidays pop on by and chat awhile with other members. Again it will be opened early in the afternoon around 1pm EST (10am PST). Hope to see you there.

Two New Boards:
We added two new boards so if you haven't been over here for some time do stop on by and check them out.

  1. Equipment & Technology board (under the Help section). This is a place where members could talk about the various equipment and or technology that works for their needs or what didn't help. Giving our own experiences and letting others know what is actually out there.
  2. Service Animals Only Chat. This is a board in which we let our animals do the talking. Yes a silly board in which we could just let our hair down sort of speak. A light hearted place for animals to speak. grins. There's
already three service dogs talking. LOL. Will there be more! Will you let your dogs or cats or whatever service animal you have come and chat? Smiles.
Don't forget to stop on by and check out the new boards, Chat with others, or see what's in the news.

Happy Holidays
Pwd SD Admin.
