Welcome to Scuba Crete Atlas

Yas sou! Scuba diving in Greece has only really opened up in the last few years with the radical redrawing and enormous enlargement of the permissible diving areas. However, although there are lots of dive centres on Crete it is not always easy to find out what dive options you have, especially on the east and south coasts of the island.

What is Scuba Crete Atlas?

Scuba Crete Atlas aims to provide clear, up-to-date, information which will help visitors to Crete enjoy some diving whilst on the island. Constantly updated,  we welcome all suggestions to improve the quality and content of our site. You can also follow Scuba Crete Atlas on Twitter

Featured books

'Vertical Descent' by Steve Turley is not short (400 pages) and, at first blush, the cover blurb is not necessarily inspiring, with the prospect of Nazi treasure, u-boats ... hmm but the British diver cum author is convincing as he clearly knows his stuff, even if the text 's kick cycle is off in a few places it generally keeps the pace going. Its one of the better scuba themed thrillers so far. And, as I have dived off Corsica, (even if I missed the sub!),  I can testify to the rich and diverse marine life described by Turley!

In 'Double Cross' by, Patrick Woodrow, underwater photography is drawn into the murky world of emerald smugglers, drug dealers and Interpol, while trying to uncode a message from his grandfather which seems to point to a hidden ''inheritance'. His adventure includes some authentic dive sites and animal encounters from Curacao to the South China seas...

You can order these titles and view more suggestions in the Scuba Crete Atlas Store.

What's the weather doing?

If you're planning a holiday in Crete, CreteArena provides detailed, accurate, gimmick-free weather forecasts and current water temperatures in English, based on the very latest data.

What thermal protection do I need?

Personally, I dive in a 5mm full suit in the summer months. The brave can wear shorties ... but not me. My daughter feels the cold more and she wears another 5mm shortie and hood over the full suit. As late as May the water was pretty chilly and brain freezing within the cave at Vulisma, east of Ag.Nik, I needed a 7mm semidry!

Shore diving with Scuba Dream, near Ierapetra

Peristeras house reef and Kakkos Bay Roman Fish Tank

Diving in Crete today is concentrated on the north coast from Agios Nikolaos to Chania, but you can also dive further east and on the south coast, if you know where to go. Here we feature Scuba Dreams, located a couple of kilometres east of Ierapetra, on the coast road at Peristeras.
Thanks to Jade, Dimitrius and Manos from Scuba Dream, Peristeras, Ierepetra who introduced us to the diving of the south coast of Lasithi.

Diving Crete

Water visibility all around Crete is normally outstanding and the marine landscape can be very striking. You can expect to expect fascinating canyons, caverns and caves to explore (always remember to take a torch - not only on night/cavern dives!). You can also find the wrecks of both ships and aircraft, and underwater archaeological remains are possible. However, you have to keep a sharp eye out for marine life. You do encounter a fair amount of juvenile fish, octopus, and eels etc, but - in Scuba Crete Atlas's humble opinion, marine reserves must be established to restore fish populations. Divers could provide local fishermen a replacement livelihood... just a thought

Where else can I dive?

Selected Cretan video Dive Logs on YouTube

Kakkos Bay is most famous for its ancient fish tanks, but if you explore the eel grass you'll find the occasional Pipefish.

From the Scuba Dream team on Peristeras beach you can go on DPV dives.

Belgium diver, Jerome Smeets, shares some very neat clips from a number of  Cretan dive sites on both the north and south coasts on YouTube.

Here are some of Jerome's videos taken at the dive sites of Lake Kournas, the Damnoni canyon; Amoudi;and the caverns at Skinaria. I really liked the contrast he reveals between diving Kalypso Bay during the day to the very different experience on a night dive at the same location.

Of course, Jeromeis not alone with his cameras in the. Here is a little pot pourii of diving clips from other divers in Crete. Enjoy!
